Delores Mary (Hanisch) Staebell, the twelfth and youngest and feistiest child of Frank and Johanna (Zapp) Hanisch, passed away on January 6, 2020, at the age of 96, as the result of numerous health crises. Delores was born on January 2, 1924, and raised on the Hanisch farm northeast of Humboldt, SD. She boarded at St. Ann’s Catholic School for eight years, and graduated from Humboldt High School in 1942. During the horrible winter of 1936, while suffering from a burst appendix, and to save her life, she endured being transported by train from Humboldt to McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls. She was hospitalized for three months. In 1943, she met the love of her life, Fred M. “Chuck” Staebell, also from Humboldt. After becoming engaged, they and others traveled to Vallejo, California, to work in the shipyards during the last years of World War II. They married on September 7, 1944, in Vallejo. After the War’s end, they settled in Sioux Falls, and became parishioners of the Cathedral of St. Joseph in 1948. To ensure that their four treasured children could attend Catholic schools, Delores began work at McKennan (now Avera) Hospital. She worked nights for seventeen years and Chuck worked days so that one of them was always with their children. After the children were raised, Delores retired from the hospital business office in 1989. God bless her soul for always being a loving, loyal, generous Mother. In addition to her appendicitis health crisis, Delores survived Type 2 diabetes (For 43 years), colon cancer, a heart attack, and double stroke, all of which would have taken a less physically strong woman. But she attributed her longevity to being extremely physically active, her devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary and praying three Rosaries each day for her valued family. Delores was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Chuck, two grandsons, Zane and Jonah Staebell, her parents, eleven siblings and their spouse, and numerous nieces and nephews, all of which she mourned every day. She is lovingly remembered by her treasured children: Ronald and Virginia Staebell and Jean and Jerry Ollerich, all of Sioux Falls, SD; Thomas and Katie Staebell of Omaha, NE, Mark and Dana Staebell of Escondido, CA; sixteen grandchildren, twenty-six great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandsons. - Miller Funeral Home
