DeLoris “Dolly” Jean was born December 12, 1928, to Henry and Carrie (Rund) Delk on the family farm, south of Harvey. She was the ninth and youngest child. When she was a baby, her parents would say, “Do you want to see our little dolly?” and because of this, she became known to all around her as “Dolly.” With such a big age difference between Dolly and her siblings, she spent a lot of time by herself. When her dad helped neighboring farms, Dolly would go along in hopes of playing with younger children. Her dad drove their 1928 Oldsmobile on the prairie trails too fast for Dolly’s liking, and she could hardly wait to get home to tattle to her mother. Dolly attended country schools through 8th grade, then moved into town during the week for her high school years. She enjoyed her home economics class where she learned several sewing tricks. Dolly graduated from Harvey High School in 1946 and immediately began teaching for one year at the Berlin Township School due to a teacher shortage for the country schools. Dolly was known for her great piano playing abilities. At a young age, when she heard a song being played or sung, she would sit at the piano and learn to play it by ear. The first song she remembers playing was “Sweeter Than the Day Before.” At the age of 11, she started taking piano lessons throughout high school. She began playing piano for their church at the age of 14 and continued for over 70 years. On October 5, 1946, Dolly married the man of her dreams, Charles Reimche, in the Harvey Country Mennonite Brethren Church. They established their home on the Reimche family farm 8 ½ miles south of Martin, where they farmed and raised five children. Dolly joined the Farm and Home Homemakers Club as a young mother and participated for many years, as there was so much to learn about caring for a home, cooking, and raising children. Deeply devoted to her family, Dolly made sure everyone felt loved and cared for. She was a wonderful hostess, and when you entered her home, you were welcomed by delicious aromas of an endless amount of food. The family enjoyed her German dishes of sauerkraut struddle, knephla, dumplings, and kuchen. If you had breakfast at Dolly’s, you most likely would have her homemade caramel rolls with summer sausage and cheese sandwiches. In 2015, she published a cookbook with her well-known recipes as a Christmas gift to her family, a gift that is cherished by all. Besides caring for her family, service to God and others was important to Dolly. She was an active member of the Mennonite Brethren Church, serving in many different capacities, including teaching Sunday school, being active in Women’s Missionary Service, directing a women’s choir, and playing the piano. She was also a long-time member of the Gideons Women’s Auxiliary. The idea of service did not end in the local community. Once Dolly and Charles were empty nesters, they partook in many mission projects. Among these included a church outreach ministry in Downey, CA. They made several mission trips to Mexico promoting the gospel through witnessing and a tract ministry. Together, Charles and Dolly volunteered at the Tabor College library, arranging an old German weekly newspaper, Vorwarts, in chronological order and translating from German to English. While doing this, Dolly found articles that her father wrote and especially enjoyed translating his articles. Dolly had a strong faith in God, and August 1995, when she was diagnosed with breast cancer, was no different. In her 1996 Christmas letter, she wrote: “I learned from previous experiences that worry and grief will not help my problem. My choice was to trust God, my Guide, to lead me through this valley. (Phil. 4:7a and Psalm 34:1-4).” After Charles passed away in 2008, Dolly continued to live on the family farm until her stroke in 2015, when she began living with her daughter, Starla, and son-in-law, Dave. She later moved to the Oxford Grand Assisted Center in Wichita, KS. On Monday, December 9, 2019, Dolly entered into her heavenly home at the age of 90 years, just three days short of her ninety-first birthday. Dolly was a loving, generous, selfless wife, mother and grandmother. She will be deeply missed by her children, Tom (Marcie) of Wahpeton, ND, Richard (Cheryl) of Troutdale, OR, Clyde (Brenda) of Martin, ND, Starla (Dave) Gerber of Wichita, KS, and Tim (Tammy) of Scottsdale, AZ; 20 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; one sister, LaVaughn Fleming of Arlington, VA; one sister-in-law, Alice Martin of Fessenden, ND; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles; her parents; and seven brothers and sisters.
