JAKE GERRITSEN KILLED IN ACCIDENT MONDAY Was Assisting Husband With Work of Picking Corn When ill Fated Accident Occurred Mrs. Jake Gerritsen, wife of a well known Eagle township farmer, was fatally injured about 10:30 Monday morning in an accident which occurred while she was assisting in picking corn on the Gerritsen farm, 7 miles northeast of Hawarden. The family arose early Monday morning and after breakfast Mr. Gerritsen and the two older children went to the corn field, taking two wagons. Mr. Gerritsen used one of these and the two children used the other. Mrs. Gerritsen remained at the house to do the weekly washing. She finished this work about 10 o'clock and then with the youngest daughter went to the field, taking a lunch for the members of the family who were picking corn. After they had eaten their lunch Mrs. Gerritsen decided to remain and assist with the corn picking until dinner time. She and the older daughter took charge of one of the wagons while Mr. Gerritsen and his son continued work with the other. The smallest girl climbed into the wagon into which Mrs. Gerritsen was picking. They had been at work only a few minutes when the team hitched to the wagon which Mrs. Gerritsen was using became frightened at something and lunged suddenly forward, starting to run. Mrs. Gerritsen grabbed for the lines and succeeded in getting hold of one of them but just as she did so the team turned sharply to the left and she was thrown with great force against the wagon, her head striking against the front wheel. This must have stunned her so that she fell and the rear wheel of the wagon passed diagonally across her body from the left shoulder to the right hip. The little girl in the wagon succeeded in stopping the team. Mr. Gerritsen was just a short distance behind and rushed to his wife's assistance but she was unconscious when he reached her. The weight of the half-loaded wagon had crushed several of her ribs and caused internal injuries. With the assistance of the children Mr. Gerritsen carried her to the house and immediately summoned a physician as well as the neighbors but she died within five minutes after reaching the house without regaining consciousness. The deceased was born at Orange City Nov. 25, 1887, so had not yet reached her 34th birthday. She was united in marriage Sept. 1, 1905, with Jake Gerritsen at Sioux Center and twelve years ago they moved onto the farm which has since been their home. They purchased the farm a few years ago. Besides her husband she leaves three children, Nellie, aged 14, Frank, aged 10, and Margaret, aged 6. She is also survived by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Popma of Maurice, and three brothers and seven sisters, Abel Popma, Albert Popma, Mrs. Ira Muilenburg, Mrs. John Schuller and Mrs. Henry DeRaad of Ireton, Mrs. John Muilenburg of Orange City, Cornie Popma of Sioux Center, Mrs. Gerrit Kote and Misses Margaret and Marie Popma of Maurice. Funeral services were held at 1 o'clock Wednesday afternoon at the home and at 2 o'clock at the First Reformed church in Ireton, conducted by the pastor, Rev. H.E. Reinhart. Interment was made in the Ireton cemetery. Mrs. Gerritsen was a hard working woman, a good neighbor and a thorough Christian. She was a home loving body and her every aim in life was for the comfort and well being of her family. Her tragic death is not only an irreparable loss to her family but a distinct blow to the community in which she resided.
