DENISE CATHERINE DITTRICH passed away on Thursday, April 14, 2011 at Virginia Hospital Center at Arlington, Virginia surrounded by her family after a valiant fight against ovarian cancer. She was 52, the beloved wife of Tom McGivern, and Connor McGivern's cherished Mom. Denise was a resident of both Alexandria, Virginia and Fleeton, Virginia, and was adored by family and friends there, in Nebraska and Iowa, and across the country. Denise and her twin brother Keith were born on April 1, 1959, in Tilden, Nebraska, to Marcellus and Mary Dittrich. She grew up on the family farm and attended District 50, a one-room country school through second grade, then District 96, a three-room country school through eighth grade, before attending and graduating in 1977 from Elkhorn Valley Public School in Tilden. After high school, Denise attended the Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture in Curtis, Nebraska, and worked as a veterinary technician in Palmer, Nebraska. Next she attended the University of Nebraska at Lincoln, where she went to school while also working in the Farm Credit System. Following graduation from UNL in 1984, Denise began her career as a bank examiner in Omaha, Nebraska with the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC), an agency of the U.S. Department of the Treasury that regulates nationally chartered banks. She had additional OCC postings in Boston, MA, and at OCC headquarters in Washington, DC. Denise also became a Certified Financial Analyst in 1997. In 1999, Denise began working as a financial analyst for the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System, also in Washington, DC, in the Board's Bank Supervision and Regulation Division. Denise and Tom were married on April 5, 1997, in Corolla, NC, and welcomed their good son Connor into their lives in July 2000. Denise and Tom are members of Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Washington, DC. Besides her Dittrich and McGivern families, Denise's passions included traveling, gardening and cooking. In addition to Tom and Connor, Denise is survived by her mother, Mary C. Dittrich, of Norfolk, NE; her brother John and Jeanne Dittrich of Meadow Grove, NE, and niece Katie and nephew Jake; her twin brother Keith and Tammy Dittrich of Tilden, and nephew Josh and niece Claire; her sister Suzette Dittrich and Bill Hoffman of Washington, DC.; and many Dittrich aunts, uncles, and cousins. She also is survived by a large and loving McGivern family from Iowa and across the nation who embraced her as a daughter, niece, sister, aunt, and cousin. There will be a visitation for Denise at Brockhaus-Harlan Funeral Home in Tilden, Nebraska on Monday, April 18 from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m., followed at 7:00 by a wake service at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church in Tilden. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, April 19, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary's Church in Norfolk, Nebraska. Denise will be laid to rest at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Tilden next to her Dad, Marcellus Dittrich, who preceded her in death in 1999. Additional memorial services are pending in Washington, DC and the Northern Neck of Virginia.
