In his childhood days, he returned to Harper from Hutchinson to live with his grandma, Margaret Bruce McDaniel. He attended Harper Elementary and Harper High School, graduating with the class of 1964. Many of Dennis's friends knew him as "Mick". His grandkids knew him as "Poppa Nick". Read More	Dennis Dale McDaniel was born June 22, 1946 in Hutchinson, KS; the oldest son of Clyde R. and Dixie (Smith) McDaniel. In his childhood days, he returned to Harper from Hutchinson to live with his grandma, Margaret Bruce McDaniel. He attended Harper Elementary and Harper High School, graduating with the class of 1964. Many of Dennis's friends knew him as "Mick". His grandkids knew him as "Poppa Nick". On Sunday afternoons you could always find him just across the street from his Grandma's, playing softball or baseball with the kids in the "Neighborhood Clan". In High School, he was an avid basketball player. He was also on the traveling baseball team during the summer. On Jan. 27, 1966, he joined the United States Navy. He served his country during the Vietnam War aboard the USS Sanctuary, a hospital ship. He was a flight director for planes landing and leaving the ship. He was released from active duty and transferred to Naval Reserve Station at Long Beach, California. He received the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, and Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal prior to his honorable discharge in 1971. Dennis married Cheryl Grinnall and they made their home in Freeport, Illinois. Steven and Nichole are their children. Dennis was 3rd shift manager at Kelly Springfield (Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co.) in Illinois. In 1992, he decided to return to Harper. He met Martha (Schulte) Angle and they were married in 1993. Dennis worked at Elco Mfg., Esping Liquor Store, Sav-A-Trip, and R & A Supply. He was also a Reserve Officer for a short time. Upon his disability in 1999, you could find him in his recliner, waiting for Sunday football- Dan Marino & the Miami Dolphins. His health declined and he was diagnosed with "Pick's Disease", a form of dementia, of which there is no cure or medication. The disease took a dramatic toll on him making it difficult for him to talk, walk, and maintain basic functions. On December 1, 2012, he was admitted to Harper Hospital with pneumonia. The progression of the Pick's Disease required 24-hour care, so on December 19, 2012 he was transported to Kansas Soldiers Home at Fort Dodge, KS. On March 15, 2013, he died peacefully with his wife by his side. Dennis was preceded in death by his parents, his step-mother, Georgia, and one brother, Michael. He is survived by his wife, Martha, of the home; son, Steven McDaniel and family of Amarillo, TX; daughter, Nichole Andreas and family of Freeport, IL; step mom, Fern McDaniel of Ponca City, OK; brother, Steve McDaniel & family of Ponca City, OK; sister, Carol McDaniel of Alva, Ok; Step-son, Jerry & Tiffany (Asper) Angle & family of Anthony, KS: Step-daughter, Kristie (Angle) Strickland & family of Claremore, OK; Step-daughter Susie Gariglietti & family of Alma, KS; Brother-in-law, Rodney Schulte & family of Wichita, KS; Sisters-in-law: Darlyne Bornholdt & family of Harper, KS; Marie Esping & family of Harper; and Gina Powell & family of Caldwell, KS. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren, many other relatives, and a host of friends.
