Sheriff Kenneth Jones identified the dead as: Sheryl Lary, 18, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Orris Lary, who farm three miles northwest of Massena. Loretta Denney, 17, daughter of Mrs. Mable Bicking, who lives five miles northeast of here. Robert Dale Pond, 17, son of Mr. and Mrs. Glen Pond, who farm near the Larys. Dennis Earl Morrison, 17, son of Mr. and Mrs. Perry Morrison of Massena. The sheriff said the students' car was passing another vehicle when it collided head on with a North American Van Lines truck driven by Harold Riddle of Fort Wayne, Indiana. Riddle escaped with minor injuries. The bodies were pinned in the wreckage for more than an hour. The accident occurred on Iowa 92 a short distance west of the Massena junction. O. W. Joiner, superintendent of the C & M school district, said the entire senior class of 16 seniors started out in four cars this morning. As is the custom, the students were en route to various towns and business places in the area to solicit advertising support for the school annual. When word of the crash was received at the school a time of anguish followed. Joiner said that because the bodies were pinned in the wreckage it could not immediately e determined definitely which four students had perished. As the other three cars checked in, one by one, or as word of them was received it narrowed the possibilities down until only one car remained and the identity of the victims was established. "It is a wonderful senior class and they were fine youngsters," Joiner said. Massena is a town of about 500 in southeastern Cass county southeast of Atlantic. Authorities said it was foggy on the highway at the time of the accident. The westbound car was registered to Pond but it was not known who was driving. The accident occurred about 9:15 a.m. and the scene of the collision was 2 1/2 miles from the schoolhouse. The Massena school's annual is known as "The Eagles" and the superintendent of the Massena school itself is Marlen Shell. As soon as word of the deaths was confirmed, classes were ordered dismissed for the remainder of the week. The victims were seniors at the Cumberland & Massena Community school in Massena. Services for Dennis Earl Morrison, 17, son of Mr. and Mrs. Perry Morrison of Massena, will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday in St. Patrick's church. Denny was born in Massena in August 1940. He was homecoming king last year at Massena and was scheduled to crown the new king Friday night at homecoming festivities. Surviving besides his parents are four brothers, Dough, who is stationed at Atlanta, Georgia, Clifford, Charles, and Michael at home. Services for Loretta Denney, 17, daughter of Mrs. Mabel Bicking who lives on a farm northeast of Massena, will be held at 12:30 p.m. Saturday at Berea Gospel hall with burial in Massena township cemetery. The body will lie in state at the Long funeral home in Anita until the service hour. Born in Massena township on August 31, 1940, Loretta attended Massena township school No. 1, where she graduated from the eighth grade before entering the Massena high school. Her mother is a teacher in Adair county and her father, Lesley Denney, died in 19.. The Pine Grove Methodist church northwest of Massena will be the scene of services at 3:30 p.m. Saturday for Sheryl Ann Lary, 18, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Orris Lary, farmers four miles northwest of Massena. Burial will be in the Massena Center cemetery with the Rev. ... officiating. The body will be taken from Hodges funeral home in Cumberland to the family home Friday afternoon where it will lie in state until the service hour. Sheryl was born in Atlantic on September 26, 1939 and had attended rural school and the Massena high school where she was a member of the school band. She also belonged to the Pine Grove Methodist church. Surviving are her parents, Orris and Veronica Lary; a brother, John M. Lary, and her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. John Lary and Mr. and Mrs. Harry McKee Sr. Services for Robert Dale Pond, 17, only son of Glenn and Irene Bannick Pond, farmers five miles northwest of Massena, will be at 1:30 p.m. Sunday in First Evangelical Lutheran church northeast of Cumberland with the Rev. M. H. Brandt officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Robert and the Lary girl were neighbors and classmates during their entire school life. He was also president of the senior class and had attended Hawkeye Boys State at Des Moines last summer. Surviving besides his parents are two sisters, Mrs. Beverly ... of Omaha and Mrs. Beulah Follmann of Massena.
