His funeral service was at 2:00 PM Saturday, November 24th at First Assembly of God Church with Rev. Tom Brantner officiating. Burial was in the Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery. Dennis Lee "Denny" Gross was born in Huron on November 16, 1937, his mother's 21st birthday, to Jake K. and Barbara (Stahl) Gross of Carpenter. He grew up and attended rural schools in that area. He left school in the ninth grade and went to work for area farmers. In 1956-1957, he worked on the railroad and during the summers for Art Schinkel of Webster, South Dakota on his farm. In 1958, he began his employment with Armour & Company and continued with Swift & Company and Dakota Pork until his health caused him to quit in 1994. He then began a job he loved helping his friend Bob Glanzer on the farm. The onset of MSA caused him to retire in 2004. Denny was united in marriage to Janet M. Joseph at Iroquois on October 30, 1960. They settled in Huron where he lived the remainder of his years. Auto racing caught his interest and in 1965 he and his friend Eldo "Buck" Thielfoldt built the first #60 stock car—a red and white 1957 Chevy. When Buck moved in mid-summer Denny continued racing on the tracks in South Dakota in the stock and late model divisions through the 1981 season. He won track championships at Valley Speedway and the South Dakota State Fair Speedway in Huron, Central Speedway in Miller, Brookings Speedway and Casino Speedway in Watertown. He won the South Dakota State Fair Race in 1972 and was awarded several sportsmanship awards including special ones from Black Hills Speedway in Rapid City and Casino Speedway. Racing brought Denny and Janet many happy memories and friendships, and they continued to attend races after he quit driving. In 2005, friends Wilbur and Lorin Johnson from Miller changed Lorin's late model number to #60 and dedicated that season to Denny. That meant a lot to him. Denny was an avid NASCAR fan and attended races around the country where he cheered for Jeff Gordon and the Waltrips. He enjoyed fishing and all types of hunting and had received several trophies for fishing and his deer racks. He also loved to watch old Westerns and the Minnesota Twins on television. On May 10, 2011, Denny entered the SunQuest Healthcare Center. He accepted Jesus as his Savior on September 11, 2011. Denny is survived by his wife, Janet of Huron; his brothers, Gene (Kaye), Gordon (Mary) and Bill (Lynnett), all of Huron; and a sister, Barbara Rosenberger of Garner, Iowa; two nephews, Rod (Lori) Gross of Wolsey and Travis (Teresa) Gross of Cavour; three nieces, Lori (Mike) Wallenstein of Huron, Tammy Ransom of Tallahassee, Florida, and Misty (Jeff) Fasching of Ft. Madison, Iowa; a sister-in-law, Marilyn (Jerry) Korkow of Iroquois; a nephew-in-law, J.T. (Julie) Korkow of Broadus, Montana; a niece-in-law, Kimberly (Kirk McNeff) Korkow of Casper, Wyoming; several great-nieces and great-nephews; and his beloved cat Shadow. Denny was preceded in death by his parents, a nephew, Bradley Rosenberger, and a brother-in-law, Gene Rosenberger.
