Description	:	Dennis and a friend Charles Staton drowned in the Des Moines River in Ottumwa on March 19, 1959. They were in a boat going upstream toward the dam, and they went too close to the dam, getting caught in a swirling eddy at the bottom of the structure, causing the boat to fill up with water and sink. Read More	Dennis and a friend Charles Staton drowned in the Des Moines River in Ottumwa on March 19, 1959. They were in a boat going upstream toward the dam, and they went too close to the dam, getting caught in a swirling eddy at the bottom of the structure, causing the boat to fill up with water and sink. Dennis’ brother Charles Johnson was also in the boat, but he managed to swim to the mid-channel island, where he was rescued. He told officials that the Dennis and Charles Staton were trying to swim to shore when he last saw them. The river was quite deep and swift in the area at that time. Volunteers and fire and police departments from a dozen cities joined the search for the boys’ bodies. Dennis’s body was finally found on Sunday, May 24, 1959, when it was recovered in the Mississippi River, a half mile south of Alexandria, Missouri, after it had traveled about 100 miles on two swollen rivers. Dennis was a sophomore at Ottumwa High School at the time of his death. He attended the Ottumwa Baptist Temple.
