Description	:	Husband of Jessie E. Hoffman Carman. Father of Raymond, Edwin, and Lucille. Denslay L. Carman was born in Floyd county, Iowa, June 9, 1872. He came with his parents and family to South Dakota in 1886, settling on the farm on the county line, NW 1/4 of section 6-124-77, now owned by Mrs. Charles R. Carman. Father of Raymond, Edwin, and Lucille. Denslay L. Carman was born in Floyd county, Iowa, June 9, 1872. He came with his parents and family to South Dakota in 1886, settling on the farm on the county line, NW 1/4 of section 6-124-77, now owned by Mrs. Charles R. Carman. When he became of age in 1893, he homesteaded on the SE 1/4 of 6-124-77. In the year 1905 he was united in marriage with Jessie E.Hoffman, who was also a member of one of the pioneer families of the county, and they began housekeeping in a sod house which he had built on the claim. In 1906, a small frame house was built, where they lived and raised their three children, Raymond, Edwin and Lucille. In 1929 a new modern house was built. The original homestead was gradually added to until it now consists of 720 acres. Mr. Carman passed away suddenly on August 24,1934. In 1928, the oldest son, Raymond, was married to Irene Welton of Selby, and they occupied the small house from 1929 until 1937 when they moved to another place and Edwin took over the operation of the home farm. Raymond later bought the Hans Engebretson farm and still later purchased land in Section 5, Township 122, Range 76, where he has built up a modern farmstead. The house was sold off the Engebretson place and moved to Selby and is now the property of L. James Moell and occupied by the Milo Swift family. The other buildings were either torn down or moved to the new place and in 1945, one of the fine new modern farm homes of the county was built. Lucille has taught rural and city schools in Walworth and Campbell counties and is now married to Harry Stowell and resides in Mobridge. Edwin and his mother operate the home farm. Denslay L. Carman was a skillful farmer and stock raiser. In the days before the drought it was well worth a trip out there to see his crops, his garden and the wonderful fruit and his trees. His sons, too, are high class farmers, following in the footsteps of their pioneer parents and grandparents in doing their full part in continuing the development of the land on which the family long ago pitched its tent and which all came to love so well.
