Born Feb. 25, 1922, in Wood River, Ill., Mr. Carr was the son of the late Otto and Christina Carr. A memorial service in celebration of Mr. Carr's life will be on Friday, Dec. 12, at 1 p.m. in the chapel at Heritage Funeral Home-Weddington Chapel, 3700 Forest Lawn Drive, Matthews, N.C., with Pastor Bill Fogarty, First Baptist Church of Weddington presiding. The family will greet friends and family one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn East Cemetery in Matthews. Born a city boy, he moved with his family to his grandparent's farm during the Great Depression. He flourished there, loving the farm life and working the fields with horses. He served proudly in the U.S. Army where he fought in World War II. He was proud to have marched into Rome, helping to liberate that great city. He returned there for the 50th anniversary activities with several of his army buddies. He was a charter member of the World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C., and was part of the dedication activities. Denver, one of the "Greatest Generation," loved retelling army stories to his family. He enjoyed bowling, traveling, gardening and anything John Deere. His family and his church were his greatest joys. A lifelong member of Grace Baptist Church in Waterloo, he served faithfully until his move to North Carolina. Moving to North Carolina two years ago to be with his family was a great adventure for him. He enjoyed "supervising" the addition to his daughter's house, where he would reside. There he enjoyed watching his daughter ride her horses, helping his son-in-law, talking to his grandsons about the war and watching the deer herd outside his window. Described as a quiet and unassuming man, he was a great helpmate to his wife and a true gentleman in every sense of the word. Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Maxine; daughter, Susan Hanson and husband Dennis; sons, Thomas Carr and wife Lynn, and Daniel Carr and wife Sandra; grandchildren, Jason, Christopher, Jeremiah and David Hanson; and one sister, Marlyn. In addition to his parents, Denver was preceded in death by his brothers, Casper and Dallas. The family wishes to extend a special thank you to Hospice personnel Lynde, Raina and Tracy. To Drs. Howard Guthmann and Leigh Younce for their care above and beyond. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Denver's memory to Hospice and Palliative Care, Charlotte Region, 1420 E. 7th St., Charlotte, NC 28204.
