Derold graduated from Aplington High School in 1965. He then attended Ellsworth Community College and received an Associate’s Degree in Radio and Television Repairs. On June 28, 1968, Derold was united in marriage with Kathleen Mae Little at the First Presbyterian Church in Montezuma, Iowa. After their marriage, the couple lived for 2 ½ years in Mt. Vernon, Iowa, and Derold worked as a radio and TV repairman. In 1970, Derold and Kathy moved to a farm south of Aplington where Derold farmed. In February 1979, the couple moved to their current home north of Ackley, where they continued to farm. While farming, Derold also worked for Art Buseman for 20 years. Derold was an active member of Bethel Baptist Church in Iowa Falls, Iowa. He taught adult Sunday School from 1978 to 2018, served as a chairman of the deacons and head usher. Derold enjoyed farming, especially working with the cattle. He also enjoyed camping and giving rides to his grandchildren on his toy – his 4-wheeler. Derold was very welcoming to everyone. Derold died March 20, 2019, at his home in Ackley. Derold is preceded in death by his parents and one grandchild, Jada Ryan. Derold is survived by his wife of 50 years, Kathy; one son, Doug (Angie) Meyer of Des Moines, Iowa; three daughters, Laurie (Matthew) Novotny of Creston, Iowa, Stephanie Meyer of Ackley, and Melissa (Michael) Ryan of Pocahontas, Iowa; twelve grandchildren, Caleb, Dustin and Courtney Meyer, Nathan Novotny, Avery, Jasmine, Collin, Cora, Titus, Benjamin, Joseph and Jeffery Ryan and baby Ryan on the way; one brother, Wayne (Cindy) Meyer of Tama, Iowa; four sisters, Marilyn (Don) Poppens of Parkersburg, Iowa, Kathy Meyer of Waverly, Iowa, Roxie Nauman of Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Elaine Dietrich of Brooklyn, Iowa. Funeral Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 26, at the Bethany Lutheran Church, with burial in the Union Cemetery, both in Iowa Falls. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Monday at the Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home in Parkersburg, (319)346-1534, and one hour before services at the church.
