Dewey Henry Hess was born Feb. 27, 1925 at Springfield, Ohio to Frank and Edna Hess. He received his education in the Sioux City Public Schools and was graduated two years ago from Iowa Lakes Community College in Marine Mechanics. He was married on Aug. 31, 1946 to Barbara Kennedy at Sioux City and to this union five children were born, two sons and three daughters. He resided in Sioux City where he was a salesman for Team Electronics until December of 1960 when to moved to Arnolds Park and became a partner in H and H Auto Supply. He was a member of Gloaming Lodge No. 482 (Master of the lodge in 1966), Royal Arch Chapter No. 132 of Spirit Lake (High Priest in 1966), American Legion Post No. 654 of Arnolds Park, and the V. F. W. of Spirit Lake. He was a veteran of WW 2, serving in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific from 1942 to 1946. He died Aug. 11, 1974 at Veterans Hospital in Minneapolis after a ten-month illness. Surviving are his wife, Barbara; one son, Kevin of Spirit Lake; three daughters, Valerie Little of Arnolds Park, Victoria Bertrand of Sioux Falls, and Leah Custer of Spirit Lake; father, Frank of Arnolds Park; mother, Edna E. Lewis of Anaheim, Calif.; stepmother, Grace M. Hess of Arnolds Park; two sisters, Doris J. Murphy of Anaheim, Calif., and Dorothy Davis of Point Marion, Penn; one brother, Don of Bakersfield, Calif; three stepsisters, Neva Fluke of Melpitas, Calif., Nadene Champlin of Sioux City, and Norma Champlin of Centralia, Wash., and seven grandchildren. Preceding him in death was a son, Kenneth in 1953. Obituary is published in the Spirit Lake Beacon, Aug. 22, 1974. ----------
