This is the only known photo of Dewey, and the only known portrait of the whole family together, it was in the possession of Pearl Rinehart - Pye. It is missing their father. Dewey was born at the Clifton #2 Mill Village in May 1902. His father John Rinehart had brought his family down from the NC mountains to earn money in the textile mills as many families of the time did. John was much older than his wife Mary, she was his second and much younger wife. John took his new young family back to Madison County, NC the last time after having purchased two tracts of land there and died unexpectedly of a stroke there on 19 Oct 1908, he was 70; Dewey was six years old when he lost his father. After Dewey's grandfather Reuben Lindsey sold everything John Rinehart owned and gave it to his daughter Mary, his mother Mary then brought the children back to Spartanburg , but then Mary impulsively gave away all their inheritance to a Spartanburg Baptist preacher who was building a new church, leaving herself and her children destitute. (I was told by my father that their oldest son Melvin was so furious when he found out what his mother had done that he went tearing up and down the street stomping and yelling, and then he went to the preacher and demanded he give back the money that he & his siblings had earned in the mills and that his widowed mother and siblings depended on; the evil preacher refused. The amount would've been about $1000 (equivalent in spending money to approximately $28,162.20 today in 2020). Melvin was about 17 yrs old, a minor, and he could not force the preacher legally to return the money, but his mother had also donated a family bible and this he did get back by taking it off the podium. I don't know what happened to the bible, his descendants say they have never seen it.) Melvin was so angry at his mother he left Spartanburg and went back to Madison County, NC for a while. In the 1910 census, the only census he's on, Dewey was living with his widowed mother Mary & his older brother Eddie and his younger sister Pearl, Eddie was listed as 14 & the only one supporting the family while working in the Whitney Mill. Dewey's older siblings Samantha, Melvin & Mina had all recently married or moved away, and his oldest half-brother Jim had gone out west with a cousin and joined the Army and was stationed at Fort Arapaho, Colorado in 1910. The census says Dewey's birth date was May 1902, his monument says 1903. Dewey's father was about 70 when he died, his mother was in her early 40's & Pearl said her mother was unable to work or support the family in any way, she was illiterate and wasn't able to cook or sew, Pearl said she learned to cook & sew at a very young age and she made all their clothes herself. The family had fallen on very hard times, they had first lost their father, and now they had lost all their accumulated money too. Their mother seemed unable to understand the consequences of what she had done, like many simple-minded people who fall for religion, Mary believed she had done nothing wrong. So Dewey grew up without a father living in a lot of different households, according to both Pearl and Eddie, the younger children were shunted around from relative to relative staying with those who would take them in for a while, and the older children got married. On 28 April 1918, a Sunday afternoon, Dewey was in a house on Arch St in the Spartan Mill village where his family lived and he and a friend from Madison County NC named Shuford Plemmons had a pistol and were playing with it when it went off, striking Dewey in the stomach, it penetrated his liver. Dewey died early Tuesday morning after an operation to try to save his life. He was 16 yrs old. This appeared in the Wednesday May 1 1918 edition of the Spartanburg Herald, on page 8. ------------------------------------------------ "YOUNG PLEMMONS IS GRANTED BAIL YOUTH WHO ACCIDENTALLY KILLED DEWEY RINEHART is Released From County Jail. Rinehart Died Yesterday From Wound." Shuford Plemmons who shot and fatally injured Dewey Rinehart Sunday afternoon, was yesterday released on bond from the county jail by Judge Thomas S. Seuse in the sum of $1000. Yesterday morning at 4 o'clock at Steedly's, Dewey Rinehart died as a result of a pistol wound received late Sunday afternoon at the hands of young Plemmons. At the time of the shooting the two young men were playing with a pistol on Arch St, and in some manner the weapon was discharged. The bullet entered the abdomen of Rinehart and penetrated to the liver. An operation was performed Sunday morning in an effort to save the young man's life, but without success. At the time of his death, Rinehart was 16 years of age, while Plemmons is 17. Both of the youths resided at the Spartan Mill village and were close friends. An inquest was held yesterday morning by Coroner J S Turner at the funeral parlors of John L Floyd, the jury returning a verdict to the effect that young Rinehart came to his death from a gunshot wound inflicted by Shuford Plemmons, and that the shooting was accidental. From the evidence submitted at the coroner's inquest, it appears that the affair was an unfortunate accident, and that Plemmons had no criminal intent whatever killing Rinehart. The young men were on good terms. Shortly before his death, Rinehart told his brother that the shooting was accidental and that Plemmons was not responsible for the affair, it is stated. Immediately after the shooting Sunday night, Plemmons surrendered to Sheriff W J White, and was lodged in the county jail on the charge of assault and battery with intent to kill. ----------------------------------------- Dewey was buried beside his older sister Samantha Rinehart-Prather in the pauper's section on the southwest side of Oakwood Cemetery, she had died of pellagra in 1913 (a disease of malnutrition which was prevalent and whose cause was unknown at the time, it was later found to be a deficiency of B3 / niacin from not getting enough lean meat).
