Services were today at Timberline Church in Fort Collins and will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at First Presbyterian Church in Kearney, Neb. Services were today at Timberline Church in Fort Collins and will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at First Presbyterian Church in Kearney, Neb. He was born Feb. 25, 1927, in Holdrege, Neb., to Dick and Cecil (Porter) McConnell. On Oct 19, 1947, he married June Rummel. Survivors include his wife; daughters, Peggy Johnston and Cheri Harper, both of Fort Collins; and brother, Dale of Holdrege. Additional survivors include his sons-in-law, Bob Johnston and Randy Harper, both of Fort Collins; [4 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren]; and many cousins, nieces and nephews. He graduated from Holdrege High School in 1945. He was an outstanding athlete and enjoyed all sports. Just out of high school, he was drafted into the U.S. Army. He served two years in Germany and was called back to service in 1950 during the Korean War. He served 18 months and was wounded. He received the Purple Heart and Bronze Star with two Oak Leaf Clusters. He spent many happy hours with his great-grandchildren and took great pride in his family. He worked as a mechanical contractor for new homes, schools and churches. He worked many years with W.F. Anderson and Deyle Construction. He was a 60-year member of the Presbyterian Church (USA) and a longtime member of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was preceded in death by his parents.
