Description	:	Dick Vande Pol, for nearly twenty-five years a well known farmer of this community, was killed Monday afternoon near his home, seven miles east of Hawarden, by the accidental discharge of his shotgun while out hunting. Mr. Vande Pol left the house about 2 o'clock in the afternoon to try and shoot some rabbits. A couple of hours later Mrs. Vande Pol heard the sound of a gun being discharged but gave no particular heed to it. However, as darkness began to gather and Mr. Vande Pol had not returned to assist with the chores members of the family became alarmed and started a search for him. Being unable to locate him some of the neighbors were notified and joined in the search. They picked up his tracks in the snow where he had been hunting some distance from the house and followed them to the edge of the grove, just west of the farm home, where they found his lifeless body lying on the ground with the gun beside him. Apparently he had tripped over some shrubbery in the grove and the gun must have been discharged when he stumbled and fell. The shotgun charge entered his neck and tore upwards through one side of his head. Death was evidently instantaneous. Members of his family and his many friends and neighbors were sorely shocked at news of his death. He was always a hard worker and a man of the strictest integrity and enjoyed the confidence and good will of a wide circle of friends. He was a big-hearted and a man of generous spirit and his death comes as a severe blow to his family and friends. Funeral services will be held this afternoon at 1:30 o'clock at the Vande Pol home and at 2:30 o'clock at the Methodist church in Hawarden, with Rev. J. G. Waterman in charge. Interment will be made in Grace Hill cemetery. Dick Vande Pol was born in Holland and would have been 46 years of age at his next birthday on Jan. 15th. He grew to young manhood in Holland where he followed the trade of painter and decorator in his youth. Learning of the better opportunities afforded in America he determined to come to this country to make his home and arrived in the United States in 1911. He came almost directly to this community and secured work as a farm hand and has continued to farm ever since. On Feb. 17, 1915, he was united in marriage with Miss Etta Eastman of Hawarden. For fifteen years he operated the Mrs. John Abbey farm, five miles southeast of Hawarden, but last March moved to the farm, a mile and a half northwest of Ireton, where his tragic death occurred and where he had expected to continue farming the coming year. Besides his widow he is survived by five sons and two daughters, Eva, 20; Wayne, 18; John, 16; Louis, 14; Arthur, 13; Donald, 6; and Lucille, 1 year old, all of whom are at home.
