Description	:	Our community is saddened over the death of one of our most honored citizens, Dietrich Zimmermann. He had been ailing for some time and on last Sunday was taken with such severe pains that it was thought best to take him to the hospital in Lincoln for a surgical operation. He was operated on for an obstruction of the bowels and came out from under the influence of the anesthetic but his weakened condition precluded his rallying and at 1 a.m. Friday he passed away. He was operated on for an obstruction of the bowels and came out from under the influence of the anesthetic but his weakened condition precluded his rallying and at 1 a.m. Friday he passed away. In the death of Dietrich Zimmermann we lose a valuable citizen. He was a man of great force of character. He paid cash for the first piece of railroad land sold in Nebraska. He was at one time the president of the Seward Agricultural Society and always took great interest in the work of that society. When a school district was first organized in his district, he was elected treasurer and held the place for thirty years. He cast his first vote for General Grant. He took out his naturalization papers the day President Lincoln was assassinated. He was a life long and ardent Republican. Dietrich Zimmermann was born Oct. 12, 1841, at Klein Borstel, Hanover, Germany. At the age of 15 years he came to this country and settled at Staunton, Ill., and in 1867 married Miss Katherine Stillahn. They left Illinois in 1872 and came to Nebraska where they purchased a homestead east of Seward near Middle Creek. In the latter part of 1898 he left the farm on account of poor health and moved to Seward, where he lived until he died. Mr. Zimmermann was a Lutheran since his baptism in the early days of his youth. While on the farm he was a member of the congregation known as the "Stone Church" at Middle Creek. At his death he was a member of St. John's Evangelical church at Seward. His death occurred Friday, Oct. 18, at 12:30 a.m., at the age of 66 years and 7 days. He left a wife, six daughters, one son, one sister, three sons-in-law and eight grandchildren to mourn his loss. Blue Valley Blade, Seward, NE, Wed, October 23, 1907.
