SOURCE: THE MONTICELLO EXPRESS, MONTICELLO, IOWA, MAY 20, 1897, PAGE 4 Mr. Diedrich Poppe, who during the last thirty years has been a well known resident of Wayne township, was found dead under peculiar circumstances last Monday evening, the 17th inst. He was discovered lying across a watering tank, with his face in the water. Life was extinct, and it was the opinion of those who found him, that he had been dead but a few minutes. It was at first supposed that he had fallen into the tank and drowned, but there was no water in his lungs, and the evidences indicated that he had gone to the watering tank, which was used for watering stock, for the purpose of getting a pail of water. It readily occurred to bis friends, that he had been subject to heart disease for some years, and it is now the accepted theory, that Mr. Poppe, while reaching over the tank for a pail of water, was suddenly stricken with heart failure, and fell into the tank. Mr. Poppe's home was six miles south of Monticello, where he lived upon a farm, which he purchased thirty years ago. He was born September 20th, 1829, at Reepsholt, Province Hanover, Germany, and came to America, about forty years ago. He lived six months in Tennessee, and removed from there to Maynard County, Illinois, where he made his home for ten years before coming to Jones County. Mr. Poppe was married twice. His first wife by, whom he had three boys and one girl, all of whom are alive and grown, died in 1876. He remarried in 1877, and is survived by his widow. Mr. Poppe's children, all of whom live in this vicinity, are William, Fred and Henry, and Mrs. John Schoon. Mr. Johnson Poppe was the son of Mr. Poppe's first wife. She was a widow when Mr. Poppe married her. The boy was small at that time and took his step-father's name. The funeral was held last Wednesday at 10 o'clock, the services being conducted by Rev.
