Louis Lanier, 57, second resident of Cherokee avenue to be struck down by nn automobile in 24 hours, died about 10:30 o'clock in the Hospital Thursday night, only a little more than four hours after he was fatally injured by an automobile driven by Hickson Jones, 21, son Mr. and Mis. Jim Jones. An inquest held at 11 o'clock Friday by Coroner E. R. Parker resulted in a verdict to the effect that Lanier's death was the result of an unavoidable accident. Mr. Jones, who had been arrested Thursday night on a warrant sworn out by relatives of Mr. Lanier, was released under $500 bond, signed by his father and his brother, Conrad Jones. Mr. Lanier, who lived directly across the street from J. J. Moore's store had been to the store and was returning to his home about 6 o'clock Thursday night. Mr. Jones, who operates a barber shop at the Alma Mills, was traveling in a touring car north on Cherokee avenue. After striking Mr. Lanier the car hit a small tree on the edge of right sidewalk and continued several yards before being stopped. Mr. Jones rushed into the Moore store and secured the assistance of Mr. Moore in taking Mr. Lanier into latter's house. Dr. J. H. Sanders was called, and upon his advice Mr. Lanier was carried to the hospital. At the inquest Dr. Sanders testified Mr. Lanier had several skin wounds and bruises about the scalp, face and chest, with a probable fracture of the skull, fracture of the upper cervical vertebra, and fracture through the middle of the sternum. He gave it as his opinion that intracranial pressure and shock caused death. Two employees of the Cherokee County Road Commission, James Carpenter and Cannon Wilkins, said they were on a truck en route from the maintenance camp to Gaffney and were meeting Mr. Jones' car at the time of the accident. Both declared Mr. Jones was traveling about 12 miles an hour when it hit Mr. Lanier. Carpenter swore Mr. Lanier was running across the road but that he stopped and turned back. Wilkins' testimony agreed. Other witnesses examined, included Miss Lorene Whelchel, who was an eye-witness, C. B. Jackson, Jack J. Humphries, and J. J. Moore. All witnesses agreed that Mr Jones was on the right side of the road. The jury of inquest consisted of W. D. Kirby, H. C. Humphries, G. E. Petty, W.W. Coyle,. N T. Burgess and Wade Hill Humphries. Funeral Today. Funeral services for Mr. Lanier will be conducted Saturday morning at 11 o'clock at the residence by the Rev. C. A. Kirbv. pastor of the Cherokee Avenue Baptist church. Burial will follow in Oakland cemetery with P. S. Courtney, funeral director, in charge. Mr. Lanier had been living in Gaffney about 10 years. He was a highly respected citizen. Surviving Mr. Lanier are his wife, who before marriage was Miss Sallie Coyle, and six sons and three daughters, as follows: Roland Lanier. Kannapolis, N. C., Sully, Frank, Shuford, James and Louis Lanier, Gaffney; Mrs. Vemirude Vinesett and Mrs. Agnes Moss, Gaffney: and Mrs. Mary Gilland, Spartanburg.
