OTTUMWA — Dominic Della Vedova, 90, of Davenport and formerly of Ottumwa, died March 20, 2010, at Genesis East Medical Center in Davenport. He was born June 17, 1919, in Ottumwa to John B. and Maria Andreuzzi Della Vedova. He married Mary Boyd Oct. 16, 1944. She preceded him in death in April 1999. He was a graduate of Ottumwa High School in 1936, where he served as class president. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, retiring as Colonel from the United States Army Reserve. He received the Silver Star, Bronze Star, Oak Leaf Cluster and two Battlefield Commissions. He was associated with Della Vedova Brothers Tile and Terrazo in Ottumwa. He worked as a quality assurance specialist at the Rock Island Arsenal for 20 years, retiring in 1984. He was a member of Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church in Davenport and had been a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Ottumwa and Knights of Columbus in Ottumwa and Davenport. He was a member of the National Order of Battlefield Commission and enjoyed attending the 34th Infantry reunions. Surviving are three sons, John (Janet) Della Vedova of Norwalk, Larry (Dawn) Della Vedova of Cary, Ill., and Rick (Lynn) Della Vedova of St. Paul, Minn.; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Fiory Della Vedova and Tullio Della Vedova; and two sisters, Mary Martin and Lena Della Vedova. Funeral mass will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Patrick Catholic Church; Father John Spiegel presiding. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery with military services conducted by the Iowa Army National Guard, Walter B. Schafer Post #775 Veterans of Foreign Wars and O.B. Nelson Post #3 American Legion. Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. today at Reece Funeral Home. A Christian Wake service will be 6 p.m. today at the funeral home with the family present until 8 p.m. Memorials may be made to American Diabetes Association.
