Dr. Cessna and Dr. Stanton, teachers of the school, spoke at the short and simple services. The body was interred in the Ames Cemetery. The senior class, of which the deceased was the honor member, attended the services in a body. A number of people from other parts of the state were present. Campbell, after finishing his work at the Iowa State Teachers' College, where he made a name for himself in both athletics and debate, entered the state university to take an engineering course. At the end of the year he moved to Ames, his father and sister moving to Ames at the same time and making their home here. He made a record in class work and was completing three years' work in two. Friends of Don Campbell, class of 1911, S.U.I., all grieve to learn of his death at Ames yesterday. Typhoid Fever caused the sad end of endeavor to study engineering, largely because his sister was there, and he wished to be near her. His brother, Macy Campbell, now a superintendent of schools in Iowa City, was also at S.U.I.during the past hew years. Don was a resident of Pleasanton, Iowa originally, and was 31 years of age. He was a splendid young man in every way. The Leon Journal-Reporter. Leon, Iowa 22 Feb. 1912, Thu. Don Campbell, formerly of Hamilton township, died at Iowa City last Friday, his death being caused from typhoid fever. He was a son of Elder Duncan Campbell, and one of the noted college athletes in the state. While attending the state Normal College at Iowa Falls he won the half mile and was pronounced the best half mile runner in the Missouri Valley district. He competed not only in Iowa meets but in the interstate normal event and established a record of a fraction better than two minutes for the half mile. He later entered the State University at Iowa City where he gained further laurels. He was a fine young man and his early death is deplored by many friends. Campbell is the first of the really great athletes of the early days of state contests to die from the effects of disease. Homer Holland was shot and Henninger, the great Ames hurdler of a little later date was killed y an accidental fall. These three men are practically the only ones known y the present generation, Johnny Crum being a forerunner of these men, even. His death also was not directly due to disease.
