She loved to garden and cook with her mother, Alma Davis, but she was a true tomboy, preferring shooting guns, fighting, and hanging out with her older brother, Jim Davis, and little brother (and best friend), Ed Davis. Dona's dad, Jay Davis, was one of the absolute best gunsmiths and exhibition shooters in the country, and as such, he expected his daughter as well as his sons to be expert shots. He enjoyed putting them up against competitors much their senior just so they would humiliate them. "My damn daughter could beat you." My mom knows that if she lost, the beating would be the one she would get when she got home. When Dona graduated from high school in 1948, (her graduating class was only four students),she took off with her best friend, Donna Jean, and headed for the rodeo circuit in Wyoming. The two of them truly were the "Thelma and Louise" of their generation, rolling around in a Buick convertible and getting into trouble wherever they went. While she was working with the Cub Scouts in the mid 70's, she won the "Presidential Exposition Award" for the first time ever. Failure was not an option and she couldn't let her boys down. She would also win awards for her paintings, which was her true passion. Rarely would she go to bed before 2 or 3 in the morning, often times stopping only to go and work an eight-hour shift at Sears. She followed an adage that "If a lot is good, more is better and too much is just about enough." She wouldn't allow herself to lose. When it came to her own personal health, Dona continued to be a fighter. She survived bladder cancer surgery. "Life expectancy was three years – she went 22 years!" With heart value replacement, she "died on the table for 6 ½ minutes". The nurse told me "she's dead". I called everyone to tell them she passed away and then walked back to the hospital. "Hey, your mom's alive again." The doctors shocked her heart 37 times and restarted it. It shortened everyone's life when I called back to tell them she was alive again. There were back surgeries with plates and screws plus another different cancer surgery. A fall into a concrete curb required "27 stitches to put her face back on". Two huge binders at the hospital and yet, Dona kept her sense of humor. The nurse asked her, "What's your birthday?" She replied, "May 1st." The nurse asked, "What year?" Mom replied, "Every year, ha, ha!" I know that this world seems a lot emptier without her in it. I'm grateful to have had a mom who was tough as nails, not politically correct, and painfully honest.
