Description	:	Donald Albert Schmidt was born on the family farm, August 29, 1924, son of Fredrick and Anna (Bergman) Schmidt. Don was schooled for one year at Center School, seven years at Zion Lutheran Parochial, and four years at Ocheyedan High School, where he graduated. (The first year, Zion had over forty students for one teacher.) The Lord saved his life through diphtheria and malta fever as a young child, along with other life-threatening problems until the age of 92. Read More	Donald Albert Schmidt was born on the family farm, August 29, 1924, son of Fredrick and Anna (Bergman) Schmidt. Don was schooled for one year at Center School, seven years at Zion Lutheran Parochial, and four years at Ocheyedan High School, where he graduated. The Lord saved his life through diphtheria and malta fever as a young child, along with other life-threatening problems until the age of 92. Don enjoyed singing bass in the Schmidt Quartet from 1949 to 1951. The quartet sang at many sacred concerts in the area churches throughout the Midwest, leading him to meet Mary Lou Ahrendt of Sioux City, Iowa. The Schmidt Quartet also performed in numerous barber-shop quartet events and sang in the Walther League Conventions in Portland, Oregon and Denver, Colorado. Don sang solos for many weddings and funerals in later years. Don and Mary Louise Ahrendt were united in marriage on August 25, 1951 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Sioux City. They lived on the family farm in rural Ocheyedan. Their married life was blessed with six children, John, Paula, Doug, Trudy, Marilee and Melanie. They’ve also been blessed with twenty grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Don was a hardworking farmer. He retired in 1989 and then worked part-time with his sons and grandsons until the age of 92. He was a lifelong member of Zion Lutheran Church, Horton Township, Ocheyedan. He served as an elder, held many other offices, and sang in the choir for over 50 years. Don’s church was very important to him and his faith in the Lord was strong. Don enjoyed his family and friends, farming, traveling, golfing and fishing in Canada. The Lord took Don to Himself on Tuesday, January 3, 2017, when he passed away at his home in rural Ocheyedan, where he was born and lived his entire life. Those left to cherish his memories are his wife of 65 years, Mary Lou Schmidt; 6 children, John (Rita) Schmidt of Ocheyedan, IA, Paula (Rev. Daniel) Vogel of Manning, IA, Doug (Renee) Schmidt of Ocheyedan, IA, Trudy (Jeff) Johnson of Omaha, NE, Marilee (Kyle) Grimes of Sibley, IA, Melanie (Greg) Doeschot of Omaha, NE; 20 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Rev. Daryl Schmidt; 2 sisters, Lois Ahrendt and Arlene Schmidt. Andringa Funeral Home Ocheyeday, Iowa
