Description	:	ONAWA, Iowa -- Donald A. Waples, 87, of Onawa died Monday, March 2, 2009, at his residence. Memorial services will be 10 a.m. Friday at Rush Family Care Service in Onawa, with the Rev. Arley Ellingson officiating. Private family graveside services will be at a later date in Kennebec Cemetery, Castana, Iowa. Donald Alfred Waples was born July 5, 1921, in Castana, Iowa, the son of Alfred T. and Alma (Lawson) Waples. He was raised in the Castana area and graduated from Castana High School. He joined the U.S. Coast Guard and served his country during World War II from 1942 to 1946. Two of those years were spent on a small ice breaker on the west side of Greenland from the Arctic Circle north of Baffin Bay and the Baffin Sea. He and Gwendolyn Ruth Kellner were united in marriage on March 14, 1948, at her hometown of Oxford, Neb. The couple made their home in Onawa, where they lived their entire married life. He was employed at the Chevrolet-Oldsmobile dealership in Onawa for more than 34 years when he retired in 1986. Gwendolyn passed away March 26, 1995, in Onawa. He was a member of United Methodist Church in Onawa, a 50-year member and past Master of Vesper Lodge 223 A.F. & A.M. of Onawa and a 50-year member of the American Legion Grimsley Thayer Post 502 of Castana. He also was a member of the Loess Hills Historical Society of Monona County, Iowa and Burgess Hospital Auxiliary. He enjoyed buying, selling and trading in small antiques. He also enjoyed showing his large collection of pens and pencils to various groups of children and adults. His greatest enjoyment was any time spent together with his family and friends. Survivors include a son and his wife, Douglas and Susan of Sioux City; a daughter, Nancy Miller of Sioux City; two grandsons, Chad and his wife, Katrina, and Drew, all of Sioux City; and two great-grandsons, Ethan and Caleb. In addition to his wife, he was also preceded in death by his parents; a son-in-law, Lyle Miller; an infant brother, Ralph; and a sister, Wanda. Contributor: Karen Schneck (48308389)
