Steger, 80, of Dyersville, died Sunday, Jan. 31, 2010, at Mercy Medical Center-Dyersville, after a sudden illness. Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 3, at the St. Francis Xavier Basilica, Dyersville, with the Rev. Robert Gross officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 2, at Kramer Funeral Home, Dyersville, where there will be a parish scripture service at 3 p.m. by Deacon Jerry Miller and military honors will be accorded at 7 p.m. by American Legion Post 137 and VFW Post 7736. He was born on Aug. 15, 1929, in Dyersville, son of Sylvester and Rose Quint Steger. He graduated from Xavier High School in 1946. He worked for All Steel Welded Truck Company after graduation. He married Darlene on Jan. 16, 1954, in St. Boniface Catholic Church, New Vienna. Don served in the Army in Germany as a military police officer. Upon returning to the U.S., he joined the VFW and the American Legion, where he was a 50-year member. In 1957, he started at John Deere Dubuque Works in the tool room. He retired in 1984 as the tool room supervisor. After retirement, he drove trucks for various companies, hauling everything from gas to oversized loads to the West Coast. He drove the Bi-County Ambulance for eight years as well as the Tri-State Travel bus. Don enjoyed the Dyersville Sportsman Club, where he was a lifelong member; spending time with his children and grandchildren; fishing; sitting on the sandbar; playing dice and card games; and traveling. Surviving are his wife, Darlene; a son, Dean (fiancee, Suzanne Heber) Steger, of Dyersville; a daughter, Darla (Sam) Hogan, of Farley; nine grandchildren, Spencer, Miranda and McKenna Hogan, of Farley, Leah, Nate and Erin Steger, of Dyersville, Luke MacDonald, of New Jersey, and Shannon and Tyler Black, of Dubuque; and a great-grandchild due April 27, 2010; two sisters, Norma (Francis) Apel, of Dubuque, and Rosemary (Gene) Schmitz, of Raymond; a brother, Vern (Celie) Steger, of Dyersville; and brothers-in-law, Gerald Engelken, of New Vienna, Virg Link, of Farley, and Dan (Threse) Engelken, of Dyersville. He was preceded in death by his parents, Sylvester and Rose Steger; and a brother, Paul Steger.
