Don’s parents returned to the Geneva area when he was nine and he attended school in Geneva. Don passed away on Jan. 22, 1998, at Bryan Memorial Hospital at the age of 79 years. Don served in the Army Infantry at Fort Leavenworth, Kan., and Fort Benning, Ga., from February 1942 to December 1945. He learned his career trade of sign-making in the service. Don was united in marriage to Amanda Kohler Johnson on March 13, 1948. They spent their married life in Lincoln, where Don established the Don B. Johnson Advertising Co. In 1959 Don and Nan established the Nebraskaland Flags business. In 1964, Don became the Nebraska Game and Parks Sign Shop Superintendent and made that state department’s signs. Don retired from the state in 1984. Nan ran the Nebraskaland Flag business while Don was a state employee. After Nan’s death on Dec. 6, 1985, Don resumed operation of Nebraskaland Flags, and retired from the flag business in May of 1997. Don was active in the Sesostris Shriners and Directors Staff, Isaac Walton League, Legion Post No. 3, VFW No. 131, St. Paul Methodist Church, and other organizations. He has touched many people’s lives in Lincoln and the state through his signs and flag business. He was very creative and took pride in all his work. Don was a very caring and generous person and loved his contacts with so many people. Don was preceded in death by his parents, Ray and Lula Johnson, and his wife, Amanda (Nan) Johnson. Survivors are two aunts, Leona Klein and Leta Domeier; four brothers-in-law, Fred Kohler, Lee Kohler, Ed Conrad and wife, Jewel, and Wayne Hawley; and many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. Funeral services were held Saturday, Jan. 24, 1998, at 10:30 a.m., at Metcalf Funeral Home Chapel in Lincoln. The Rev. Doctor Bob Chitwood and Rev. Wanda Bennett of Geneva officiated. Pallbearers were LeAlen Domeier, David Domeier, Clyde Arbuck, Gary Arbuck, and Gerold Wiese. Interment was in the Geneva Public Cemetery. The Nebraska Signal January 29th, 1998 page 16.
