He died on Friday, Dec. 9, 2016, at the Community Pride Care Center in Battle Creek. * * * Donald was born Sept. 15, 1930, at family farm home south of Battle Creek to Julius and Edna (Werth) Miller. He was baptized on Oct. 5, 1930, at his parents’ home by Pastor Niermann, confirmed on June 6, 1943, at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church of Battle Creek by Pastor Carl J. Gunderman. He started school in Los Angeles, Calif., and returned to Battle Creek in the second grade, and attended a rural school, Dist. 57 south of Battle Creek. He graduated from Battle Creek High School in 1948. After he graduated from high school he started farming with his brother, Melvin. They farmed together almost all their lives. Don was enlisted in the Air Force on Oct. 16, 1951, trained at Lockland Air force Base, Texas, and was discharged in 1952. On Aug. 24, 1954, he was called back to U.S. Army and was discharged in 1956. After returning home from the army, he was employed in Norfolk as a bartender. After working in the bar for a year, Don and his brother purchased Oasis Bar. On Feb. 9, 1958, Don and Alice Marshall were united in marriage. They resided in Norfolk together. Don sold the bar in 1962 and moved south of Battle Creek to farm and got involved in the ongoing business of BC Manufacturing Inc. and became a partner. Through the years Don became the sole owner of the corporation of BC Manufacturing Inc. and changed the name to BC Builders which then changed from a manufacturing company to a general contractor. Don fully retired out of the business after 46 years April 2009. Don was an active member at St. John’s Lutheran Church and served on a variety of boards. He was also very involved with the community by serving on various boards such as: Selective Service Draft Board, School Board, City Council, chairman of the Community Pride Care Center, until May 2013, because he became a resident of CPCC on May 30, 2013. Don enjoyed visiting with anyone he met. His favorite past time was curing meat, his specialty being beef jerky and gifting it to family and friends. Survivors include his spouse, Alice; children Kathie (Rod) Hasbrouck, Roger (Kylie) Miller, Scott (Deb) Miller, Julie (Steve) Hendricksen, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Virgil and Melvin, and one step-sister, Shirley Uttecht.
