Read More	Donald Campbell was born in Narin, Scotland within two miles of Colloden Battlefield and Cawdor Castle, also known as the "Campbell Castle". He was 29 years old when he arrived in New York City aboard the "Tropic" on June 17, 1837, having traveled from Scotland with his wife Christina, and 3 sons (Henry, Charles and Hugh). The day before the ship docked in New York, their youngest son, Hugh, died at about 12 months of age. (It is presumed that this child was probably buried in New York but not confirmed.) Donald Campbell was a skilled stone mason and was asked by architect, David Patton, to come to North Carolina to work on completing the massive rebuilding of the NC State Capitol building in Raleigh, NC, which had burned down in 1831. (Photo of rebuilt shown here.) David Patton was instrumental in soliciting the stone masons from Scotland. There was a deep depression and unemployment in Scotland at this time, and many gladly chose to come. Distraught after the death of their son, but still determined, the family made its way to Raleigh, NC. A few short years after their arrival, Christina was dead and Donald was left with 4 small children under the age of 10 to raise. He had lost two children and his wife within three years of arriving in America. Donald hired a 17-year old girl to help him with the children, Rebecca Jane Andrews. Within a year Rebecca and Donald were married, and at least 7 more children were born to the couple. Donald Campbell was known in Raleigh as a the "Big Scotsman", and he became foreman of the marble yard of William Stronach. After the death of William Stronach, Donald took over the business until 1863. The State Government then started to run the marble yard, and Donald was made superintendent of the quarries and he held that position until his health failed. Donald's home was in Swift Creek Township (now Cary, NC), where he acquired land in the Rhamkatte area and at one time held 219 acres. Rhamkatte road was originally a British Military road called Rams Gate. It was later changed to Rhemkatte Road and finally to the present Lake Wheeler Road. Donald died on November 11, 1885 at the age of 79. His obituary appeared in the Raleigh News and Observer November 18, 1885 and is as follows: "The funeral services of the late Donald Campbell will take place from the First Presbyterian Church at ll o'clock this morning. Mr. Campbell came to this country in 1832 from Scotland to work on the present capital building and is the last of the stone cutters who assisted in erecting that edifice who settled in the section. He was for a number of years foreman of the marble yard of the late Wm. Stonach, and at his death succeeded him in business which he successfully conducted until 1863. When the penitentiary was taken in charge by the state, Mr. Campbell was made superintendent of the quarries and held that position until his health failed him. He was a good citizen and a thoroughly honest man." Rebecca died just two years after her husband in 1887. The family bible, now in the possession of Gordan Van Stephens, son of Jane Campbell Stephens, of Raleigh, NC, Donald and Rebecca's daughter. It is thought to be the bible of Rebecca, second wife of Donald. After her death, no deed could be found for the Campbell property in Swift Creek. The property was sold at auction to two surviving children, Jane Campbell and her husband, Gray Stephens; and Colin and Ella Campbell, who obtained title to the property November 24, 1888. The land was divided between them and later Colin deeded his interest to a third party. This action was successfully challenged in court by Donald Campbell's executor, William J. Hicks. The court appointed a commissioner to sell the land to the highest bidder. He tried to dispose of it during the period of 1893 to 1897 but because no deed for the land could be found he was unsuccessful. Finally, in February 1897, the court approved the sale of the 219 acres of land to Jane and Gray Stephens. Donald Campbell's wife Rebecca Jane, and many of the children, were buried at the old Campbell Family Cemetery, which has been registered with the North Carolina Archives and was found to contain 12-13 graves but only one is marked and contains the 2 people above. Several family members were reinterned at Oakwood Cemetery in Raleigh. Donald Campbell's lasting monument is the NC State Capital, which was first construction on the town's central square in 1792. Occupied in 1794, the building served as the capitol until it burned in 1831. The cornerstone of the present State Capitol, constructed on the site of the former State House, was laid in 1833 and the building was completed in 1840. Edinburgh-born Scottish Architect, David Paton replaced Town and Davis as the Commissioners' architect in early 1835, and set about to find the most skilled craftsman in Europe to complete the job. Donald Campbell answered the call in 1837.
