Description	:	Donald Chauncey Haley was born Aug. 19, 1921 to Ervy and Ida (Sharp) Haley near Sparks, the third of eight children. His family moved to a farm near Millboro, SD in 1934. He died at Brady Memorial Home, Mitchell, SD, Jan. 29, 1998. He married Olive Lorraine Van Metre on Oct. 5, 1940 in Bassett. Read More	Donald Chauncey Haley was born Aug. 19, 1921 to Ervy and Ida (Sharp) Haley near Sparks, the third of eight children. His family moved to a farm near Millboro, SD in 1934. He died at Brady Memorial Home, Mitchell, SD, Jan. 29, 1998. He married Olive Lorraine Van Metre on Oct. 5, 1940 in Bassett. They farmed in Nebraska until 1949 when Don began his career in sales with Occo Feeds and the family moved to Plankinton, SD. In 1950 they moved to Millboro, SD where they owned and operated a gas station; grocery store and recreation center. They moved to Winner, SD in 1957 where Don sold groceries for Chamberlain Wholesale and Ulry-Talbert. In 1960 he became a district representative for Aid Association for Lutherans. They moved to Mitchell, SD in 1966 where Don continued his career with AAL until he was disabled in 1977. Don served as president of the Mitchell Association of Life Underwriters in 1969 and was elected president of the South Dakota Fraternal Congress in 1976. Don was baptized into the Lutheran faith in 1945. He was a charter member of Christ Lutheran Church, Winner, and served as elder, chairman of the congregation and chairman of the building committee. He also served as elder and chairman of Zion Lutheran Church, Mitchell. He was currently a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. Don was inducted into the South Dakota Amateur Baseball Hall of Fame in 1987 for playing an important role in promoting amateur baseball in South Dakota. In 1957 Don helped organize a baseball league in the Winner area. In 1966 he helped organize a city baseball organization in Mitchell and was the first president of the Mitchell Amateur Baseball Association. He served as president of the Pony Hills League in 1968. His early baseball experience included playing on the Haley Grandsons team for three years, and with the Shadley Valley, Valentine, Millboro, Colome, Clearfield, Wewela, Plankinton and Winner. He continued playing baseball until 1966 when he managed and played on the same team with his two sons. He was preceded in death by an infant son Donald Dwain; his parents, an infant brother and two sisters Eleatha Haley and Mildred Langston. Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Lorraine, Mitchell; his children, Martha Smith and husband Vern, Brandon, SD; Roger Haley and wife Marilyn, Lincoln; Michael Haley and wife Jean, Mitchell, SD, and Linda Bruns and husband Jim, Sioux Falls, SD; 14 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, Doyle Haley, Winner, SD; three sisters, Mrs. David (Donna Fae) Van Metre, Springview, Mrs. Keith (Ellen) Thomas, O'Neill; and Mrs. Ed (Hazel) Prentice, Gordon.
