Visitation will resume at 9:00 a.m. on Thursday at the church. Donald Clifford Hoss was born December 20, 1922, west of Merrill, Iowa, to Hubert and Clara (Dennler) Hoss. He was raised on a farm near Merrill. After attending country school, Don attended St. Joseph's Catholic School in Le Mars, graduating in 1941. Following high school he worked with his dad as a farmhand and then began farming on his own in 1944 in America Township, west of Le Mars. Don and Freda Hochstein were united in marriage on October 2, 1945, in Wynot, Nebraska. The couple made their home on the farm and lived there until 1981, when they moved to Le Mars. He remained active in the farming operation until 1992. Don was a longtime member of St Joseph's Catholic Church in Le Mars. He is an honorary life member of 72 years of Knights of Columbus, Trinity Council 1477, in Le Mars, which began on June 1, 1941. He became a 4th Degree Knight April 1, 1974, and also a Member of Father J. McGiveny Assembly 3088, serving god, church, and community, of which the four principles of the Order are charity, unity, fraternity, and patriotism. Don was also a member of Plymouth County Pork Producers, Le Mars Lions Club, 20 years of service with the Le Mars Chamber of Commerce, and 15 years of service on the Calvary Cemetery Board. Don also served several years on the Board of Directors of St Joseph's Church. Don loved to play golf and enjoyed card games with friends and relatives. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of nearly 68 years, Freda Hoss of Le Mars: daughters, Kate Hoss of Omaha, NE, Janet Cleary of Prescott, WI, and Mary Ellen Sabers and her husband Joe of Ames, IA; sons, Jerry Hoss and his wife Nancy of Akron, IA, and John Hoss of Le Mars; 11 grandchildren; 4 step-grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; 8 step-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Lorraine Ruden of Le Mars. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Marjorie Ruden; and a brother, Richard Hoss.
