Bowen (November 16, 1922 - June 9, 2012) Donald D. Bowen, 89, of rural LeRoy, passed away late Saturday, June 9, 2012, at Life Care Center of Burlington. Don was born on November 16, 1922, at Ottumwa, Kansas, the son of James Robert and Catherine Adeline "Kitty" (Yates) Bowen. He spent his childhood in the Ottumwa community, until 1938 when the family moved to a farm five miles south of Burlington. He attended rural schools, then Burlington High School, where he graduated in 1941. He then worked as a carpenter with Otis McIntosh, who became his father-in-law. On February 27, 1944, he was married to Icle Marie McIntosh at Crandall, and they were the parents of a son. Don was a U.S. Army veteran, and served in Washington State and in Korea during the Korean conflict. After his service, he returned to the Burlington area and worked as a carpenter, in construction, and in farming. In 1955 he went to work for Chapman Construction of Yates Center, and they built numerous commercial buildings in the region, including many in the Burlington area. In the late 1960s he worked independently as a carpenter in the Yates Center area, along with Bill and Joe Gregg, building and remodeling homes. He also raised a small herd of cattle over the years, along with haying. He liked to work in his yard, and in later years loved playing pitch at the Senior Center in Burlington. He was preceded by his wife, Icle Marie Bowen on March 7, 2003. He is survived by his son, Bill Bowen and wife Mary of rural LeRoy; a grandson, Andy Bowen and wife Nikki of Manhattan, a great-grandson, Jacob Bowen; a brother, James Weldon Bowen and Peggy O'Hare of Warrenton, Missouri, and other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, June 13, at Jones Funeral Home in Burlington, with burial following at Graceland Cemetery. The family will meet with friends for visitation on Tuesday evening from 7:00 to 8:00 PM at the funeral home.
