Read More	IN MEMORY OF Bud Perault of Kadoka, South Dakota, died on Friday, April 8, 2022 at the Kadoka Nursing Home at the age of 90. Donald Dean Perault, better known as "Bud" by his family and friends, was born August 31, 1931, in New Underwood, South Dakota, to Bert and Clarice (DeWeert) Perault. Him and his twin sister, Dona, were born tiny and premature so they stayed in the hospital for two weeks before coming home. Even then, to keep them warm, Clarice placed Don and Dona, bundled in a warm oven since they were so fragile and vulnerable to normal life conditions. They both joined big brother, Charles, five years older. Being a twin, Bud and Dona were a constant pair growing up four miles southeast of Conata, South Dakota, on the ranch. This memory of living in the heart of the Badlands was deeply etched in Bud's memory. Fondly he remembered walking with Dona to the one room country school up until the fifth grade until the government moved the family from their ranch. It was WWII and the Air Force that had taken over that entire area for the Badlands Bombing Range. The Peraults were relocated to a ranch east of Stamford along the White River. The whole affair was tough, since Bert, their father, had to herd many horses by horseback to the new location miles away all while the bombers had already started target practicing the area with bombs. Now until 8th grade, Bud and Dona walked to the Stamford country school on top of the bluffs. Bud and Dona stayed with their grandmothers while attending high school at Kadoka High School. Being quite a social pair, they made friends quickly and created lifelong memories. It was here in Kadoka that Bud met his future partner in life, Valene Riggins. Since a young boy, Bud had a great interest in aviation, building replicas of model airplanes and collecting air and naval news, so it was not a surprise when he wanted to enlist in the Navy after graduation, which had been one of his lifelong goals. Bud did basic training in San Diego, which assignments to Alaska, Japan, and Hawaii on the ship U.S.S. Point Cruz CVE-119, Bud's station was maintaining the helicopter squad that launched from the ship. During the last year of enlistment, Valene joined him after their wedding in Kadoka on New Year's Eve 1954. Now as a couple they enjoyed Bud's last year experiencing southern California, often from the back of Bud's Harley Davidson motorcycle. They lived in a tiny trailer on the base with other sailors and their spouses. After being honorably discharged, Bud and Valene returned to Bud's parents' place to live in the bunkhouse while they fixed up the old Blom place east of Belvidere. Shortly after moving to their new home, a daughter was born. Two years later, a son was born. Bud, Valene, and the children all worked together to develop, create, and care for each and every acre, as well as each and every creature that was raised. His son's favorite and, also, his Dad's, were the red and white faced Herefords. Bud was an excellent farmer and took extra pride in his fields of wheat and keeping his home place neat and painted. After a year's worth of cow/calf management, planting, and harvesting crops, and the never-ending farm chores put on hold, Bud and the family would celebrate with a family trip to nearby attractions like Yellowstone or to visit his sister in Denver. After the children were grown, Bud and Valene were able to go on larger and longer trips to the East coast, south to visit their daughter, and their 50th wedding anniversary to Hawaii. Later, the couple started going to Bud's Naval ship reunions held throughout the USA. There they met up with old service buddies, relived old times, and made many new memories. Through the years, Bud also had several skills he continued to enjoy. One was playing the guitar in a local country western band called "The Farmhands". Another was learning to fly by taking lessons and flying a small plane. He also taught himself computer skills for recording ranch business and enjoyment. However, for the most part, Bud was content and proud just to be home fixing, mending, or enjoying his many barn cats. After having spent almost 60 years together, Bud suddenly faced the future without Valene. Tragically Valene had died while Bud faced numerous health conditions. Difficult as it was and often lonely, Bud stayed on the pace and continued to participate when able with the cows and other work. For five years Bud was able to live on his own with the help of his children and grandson, not to mention his nurse and other neighbors and friends. In June, his health concerns became critical, and he moved into the Kadoka Care Center. It was his greatest enjoyment to return home, visit his cat Sissy, and be able to be with family whenever possible. At the care center he was able to get the care he needed all while feeling supported by the community. He was very appreciative of all the kindness and care shown to him by everybody there. Survivors include one son; one daughter; six grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; nephew and a host of other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife Valene on December 23, 2014; his parents Bert and Clarice Perault; twin sister Dona (Oscar) Compton; brother Charles Perault; and daughter-in-law Marlene Perault. Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Friday, April 15, at the Belvidere Community Church in Belvidere, with Pastor Gus Craven officiating. Interment will be held at the Kadoka Cemetery.
