Funeral services were Monday, Aug. 30, at the First Baptist Church in Steamboat Rock with the Rev. Harrison Lippert officiating. Burial was at the Steamboat Rock Cemetery where full military rites were provided by Hoover-Eiserman American Legion Post No. 542. A memorial fund has been established. Don was born May 31, 1934, in Steamboat Rock to Michael and Grace (Folkerts) Finger. He graduated from Steamboat Rock High School in 1952. After high school, he attended Ellsworth Community College in Iowa Falls, graduating in 1954. While attending college, his talent for baseball was discovered as he became an accomplished pitcher and was inducted into Ellsworth's Hall of Fame in 1999 for his baseball and basketball skills. Don also served in the U.S. Army for two years. On May 15, 1965, he was united in marriage to Lois Zielske at Nashua. After college, Don was self-employed for several years, then worked construction. For 18 years, he managed the fertilizer plant in Cleves. Don was a lifelong member of the First Baptist Church in Steamboat Rock, where he had served as a trustee and usher. He served on Steamboat Rock's City Council for many years and was the president of Steamboat Rock's Friendly Valley Apartments for low-rent housing. Don enjoyed his family as well as traveling, summer fishing trips to northern Minnesota, hunting deer, gardening and sports.
