He was an exceptional community leader throughout most of his life, serving as a Little League coach, Boy Scout leader, volunteer fireman, PTA president, a Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus, President of the Oil Marketer Association, and President of the Auburn Chamber of Commerce. In 1999, he was named the Chamber's Citizen of the Year. He was honored as a "Hometown Hero" by the mayor of Auburn in 2000 for his outstanding commitment an support of Auburn's School District, Youth Resources, Parks and Recreation, Food Bank, Little League, Auburn Good Ol ‘ Days, Miss Auburn Scholarship Program, and many more good causes. He spearheaded and helped finance the Auburn Veteran's Memorial. He also donated generously to community causes in Grayland and Westport, where he and Patty, his beloved wife of 57 years, enjoyed a beach house in North Cove for the 25 years and before that, spent many weekends at their beach cabin in Moclips. Donald D. Small was born on August 22, 1928 and grew up in Sedro Woolley in the Skagit Valley with his grandfather, mother Isabell Small, and two sisters, Elaine (Simpson) and Eloise (Knight). Always hard-working and driven to succeed, he got his first job selling newspapers at the age of nine. After graduating from high school, Don joined the U.S. Army and served in post-WWII Japan, where he guarded Premier Hideki Tojo at Sugamo Prison. Don attended the University of Washington before marrying the love of his life, Patricia Lemke, in 1950. After a variety of jobs in the apparel business, he went to work for the Union 76 Petroleum Distributorship in Auburn, and proceeded to buy the business over the next few years. He grew the business from a two-man shop to a substantial enterprise, realizing his lifelong dream of owning and operating a family business when his three sons joined him, along with a nephew, daughter, and various grandchildren. He added commercial truck sales to the mix in 1986. Don Small and Sons Oil Distributors now serves customers and businesses throughout the Northwest. To say that Don will be greatly missed by his family and friends is an understatement. He is survived by his wife, Patricia, five children, eleven grandchildren and one great-grandson: Terri Small and Bill, Dieter, Spenser and Chandler Bruning; Steve, Kathy, Jeff and Aaron Small; Dan, Kim and Patricia Small and Mary, Ryan and Carter Matlin; Doug, Elaine, Nick, Jennifer, Kristin, Michael, and Matthew Small; and Melissa and George Aguirre. His mother Isabell Small, grandson Kevin Small, and niece Holly Knight Gower, preceded him in death. A Memorial Mass will be held at Holy Family Church, 505 17th St. S.E., Auburn 98002, on Saturday, September 22, 2007 at 11 a.m., with a reception following in the Church Hall.
