He was born Feb. 10, 1917 in Sterling the son of Loren and Alice Hays. He received his education in Sterling schools and joined the U. S. Navy Dec. 10, 1943. During his service in the navy, Mr. Hays was stationed in a U. S. Naval Hospital in California as a hospital corp sman and worked in the rehabilitation of wounded servicemen. He returned to Sterling following his Nov. 3, 1945 release from military service and engaged in private business. Throughout his business life in Sterling, Mr. Hays was associated with the Karsch family and was assistant manager of Ace Clothing until he retired a year ago. Interested in sports, Mr. Hays for many years was a sponsor and player of city league basketball teams and Sterling softball teams. He married Pauline J.Becker June 26, 1938 in Sterling. Mr. Hays was a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church,the Sterling American Legion Post No. 20 and the Jake Uhrig Post No. 3541 Veterans of Foreign Wars, Sterling. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Pauline J. Hays of 321 N. Div. Ave.; eight sons, Richard Hays of Colorado Springs, Charles Hays of Olympia, Wash., Michael Hays and John Hays, both of Bellevue, Wash., Donald Hays Jr., Larry Hays and Ivan Hays, all of Greeley; and Bill Hays of Sterling; six daughters, Mrs. Patricia Korf of Yuma, Mrs. Kathy Hershfeldt, Miss Jeri Hays, and Mrs. Thresa Cure, all of Sterling, Mrs. Judy Guthrie of Brush and Mrs. Mary Hall of Greeley; his mother, Mrs. Alice Hays of Sterling; three brothers, Loren I. Hays of Sun City, Ariz., Marvin Hays of Rimrock, Ariz., and the Rev. Leo Hays of Pasadena, Calif., and 23 grandchildren. Jones-Hettinger Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
