Kratochvil April 20, 1923 - October 4, 2005 Donald was born on April 20, 1923 in Union County, SD to Will J. and Fannie (French) Kratochvil whose family eventually numbered seven children. He died on Tuesday, October 4,2005 at the Avera Heart Hospital of South Dakota at the age of 82. Don attended school in Alcester where he walked to school "uphill both ways". While in high school, Don competed in 4-H meat judging in Huron, SD. He was beaten soundly in the competition by a beautiful young redhead named Dorothy Jean Baldwin. Upon graduation, being the youngest son and recognizing that the farm could only be divided five ways, Don packed his bags and headed to Brookings to attend SDSC. On October 28, 1944, Don married the aforementioned Dorothy Jean Baldwin. Immediately after their marriage, Don was deployed to Europe serving in the army in WWII. Upon his return from the war Don continued his education studying at SDSC, NDSU, the University of Nebraska and Michigan State. He earned a BS, MS, and PhD. in Agronomy, Plant Breeding and Genetics--all from SDSC. During this time he taught at the college and was awarded Teacher of the Year from the College of Agriculture. In 1960 Don left SDSC to develop and direct a research program for Sokota Hybrid Producers in Brookings. In the mid 70's, he started doing research on seed corn plots in Florida, which led eventually to winters spent in Florida. After retirement, Don and Dorothy continued to spend winters in Florida developing numerous friendships with "snowbirds" from all over. Don was committed to education, serving on the Brookings School Board, the Brookings County School Board, and the State Board of Education. It was particularly in the education realm that he was never one to retreat from his principles and would publicly and strongly state his views. Don was a strong Democrat, but his main criteria was the candidate's position on education, regardless of his or her party. Don was a member of the Golden K, Lions, Elks, Masons, Shrine, and Eastern Star. At St. Paul's Episcopal Church he served numerous stints as a member of the Vestry, a Warden and a Lay Reader. Don's passion for family, friends and community was reflected in his commitment to these organizations. In addition to golf, Don enjoyed gardening, fishing, hunting, playing cards and any other activity spent with family or friends. But his greatest joy was family gatherings filled with humor and laughter, where stories were told and retold, embellished year after year. Like a rock solid chair, Don's support came from four corners: love of family and spouse; cherishing friends; faith in God; and charity for others. He is survived by his wife of nearly 61 years, Dorothy Jean Kratochvil, three sons, Lee, of Bruce SD, Mark (Patty) of Brookings, and Paul (Doris) of Pueblo, Colorado; one daughter Ann (Mike Holzhauser) of Pierre, six grandchildren, and one great grandson. He is also survived by one brother Mac (Arlene) and one sister Mary Reppe, both of Alcester; and numerous nieces and nephews. His parents and four brothers preceded him in death.
