Description	:	Donald Eugene Evans, 88, of Newton, Kansas, passed away November 21, 2013. He was born August 30, 1925, the son of Earl Horace Evans and Violet Peterson Evans Admire. He had two brothers, Earl Duane and Richard (Dick). Read More	Donald Eugene Evans, 88, of Newton, Kansas, passed away November 21, 2013. He was born August 30, 1925, the son of Earl Horace Evans and Violet Peterson Evans Admire. He had two brothers, Earl Duane and Richard (Dick). He was a devoted husband to Opal May Dent Evans, who was at his bedside during the final weeks of his illness at the Kansas Christian Home in Newton, KS. Don and Opal May were married at the Christian Church in Council Grove on November 17, 1946, six days after he was discharged from the Army. Don joined the Army in 1945 and spent a year in Japan, where he viewed the ruins of the Atomic bomb that ended World War II. Don was raised on a farm near White City, KS. As a boy, Don and his brothers attended a country grade school and high school in White City. Upon graduation in 1943, Don took over the management of the family farm until a sale could be arranged. His father had passed away the same year and times were hard. He loved raising chickens, since fried chicken was his favorite food. Don and Opal May settled in Council Grove, where he worked at Fairmont Creamery, packing turkeys for a while, before buying and operating his own service station for three years. After selling the Conoco station, he worked for Bert Grauel Chevrolet as a salesman and later a parts manager. Meanwhile, he took training and schooling through LaSalle Extension University, graduating with an Insurance Law Degree. In 1957, he began working for the MFA Insurance Company as an Insurance Claims Adjuster. He worked for several companies during his career and as a result, he and Opal May lived in several cities, including St. Louis, Wichita (twice), Edwardsville, Illinois and Topeka. He opened and operated Mid-America Claim Service in Topeka until retiring to the Council Grove Lake in 1991, after 33 years in the insurance business. During the years at the lake, Don ran the City Lake Trash Service and a lawn mowing service. For nine years, he drove a school bus for the Council Grove School District, where he enjoyed his time with the children on the route. As busy as he was, Don always found time to enjoy every chance he had to fish, hunt pheasant, prairie chicken and deer. He enjoyed the outdoors and spending time with his brother Dick and his many friends. Don and Opal May joined the Council Grove Christian Church in 1946 and became very active members. Don was Bible School Superintendent for several years. He also served as chairman of the Christian Church membership drive committee and as an Elder. He was an active member of the American Legion, President of the Council Grove Kiwanis, and President of the Kansas Claims Associations and was also a 32nd Degree member of the Masonic Lodge. Don and Opal May moved to the Kansas Christian Home Campus, located in Newton in 2003. He volunteered his help at the home and assisted in driving many of the campus residents to appointments and shopping. He was the bus driver for the home for several years when they went on resident outings. As his heath declined, they moved to the Care Home, where he lived for several months, before departing this life. He was a caring and loving person and was always there for his wife and friends. Don was preceded in death by his grandparents, parents, infant sister Doris, bother Earl Duane, niece Diane Daws, nephews David, Darrell, Daniel and Rick Evans. He is survived by his wife, Opal May, of the home; brother, Richard (Dick) Evans, of Council Grove; nieces, Debbie and Ron Meyer, of Olathe, Becky and Ed Hill, of Edmond, OK and Delores and Bill Farthing, of Hays; brother-in-law, Bob and Norma Dent, of Fort Collins, CO; and many relatives and friends.
