Hope Cemetery Association, and Rotary. He was a longtime member of the Congregational Church and later the United Church of Christ. Throughout his life, Donald had a wide range of interests which included motorcycle riding, stamp collecting, coin collecting, bird watching, and nature in general. Donald delighted in horseback riding on the dirt backroads near his home on the Caves Road with his family and friends, and was particularly fond of his horse Flash. He was an avid gun collector, specializing in Winchesters, and enjoyed hunting deer, moose, elk, and caribou in the western United States, Canada, and Alaska. One of Don's favorite pastimes was canoeing the Maquoketa River. For many years, the sport Don enjoyed the most was golfing with his weekly foursome. Don also was a voracious reader of all genres. His book choices ranged from poetry, classics, science fiction, westerns, historical novels, and mysteries. He had a special interest in the Civil War and enjoyed books on this subject as well as visiting Civil War sites. He enjoyed traveling with his family and could boast that he had been in all 50 states. He and his wife also took many trips abroad to countries which included Chile, England, Austria, Germany, Italy, and Slovenia. Donald was born on June 29, 1927 to Herman and Rowena (McNeil) Nissen in their Esgate farmhouse. He attended one-room country schools in Esgate, West Iron Hill, and Canton, where his family owned and operated a general store. After the store burned down in 1941, he moved to Maquoketa where he completed high school in 1945. Following high school, Donald moved to Arizona to find his fortune, and worked at various jobs until 1946 when he returned to Maquoketa. At this time, despite having an artificial eye, Donald successfully enlisted in the army by memorizing the eye chart. He served in the Army of Occupation in Japan. After discharge, Don briefly attended the Iowa State University and in 1948 became an associate for his aunt and uncle's insurance and real estate firm known as the John L. Jones Agency. Don bought the agency in 1953 and it evolved into the Nissen-Caven Insurance Agency which remains in the family today. He retired in July 1992. In 1950, during a pinochle game, Don met his wife of 65 years, Phyllis Rugger. She won the game, Don knew a good thing when he saw it, and decided he would ask her to marry him. The wedding took place on April 22, 1951, and together they had four children: Cindy (1953), Chris (1957), David (1958), and Jonathan (1962). Those left to honor Don's memory include his beloved wife Phyllis, of Maquoketa; his children: Cindy (Fred) Hoffman of Alpharetta, GA, Chris (Mara) Nissen of Maquoketa, and David (Lynn) Nissen of Maquoketa: three grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; one great-grandchild; several step great-grandchildren and step great-great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his son Jonathan, and his sister Shirley Dodds. His funeral service will take place at The Maquoketa United Church of Christ Tuesday, December 27. Burial will be held at Mt. Hope Cemetery.
