Baxter, 82, 2934 Ave. I, Fort Madison, died at 10:55 p.m., Thursday, July 18, 2002, at Fort Madison Community Hospital, Fort Madison. He was born May 31, 1920, at Fort Madison, the son of Harold M. and Della W. Eid Baxter. He married Helen M. Meierotto, Oct. 2, 1948, at West Point. She survives. He worked for 20 years for the railroad. In 1986 he retired from the Fort Madison Community School District with 26 years of service. He was a member of Sacred Heart Church, Fort Madison and a former member of the church choir, and was also a member of the State of Iowa Aquarium Association. He served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II. Besides his wife, he is survived by one son, Leon (wife Lou), Baxter, Fort Madison; two daughters, Mary E. Baxter, Urbandale and Jean (husband Tom) Neuweg, Fort Madison; two sisters-in-law, Anna Baxter, Fort Madison and Betty Baxter, Chula Vista, Calif.; one sister, Elenora (husband Gerald) Hobbs, Fort Madison; and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers. Friends may call after 1 p.m., Sunday, July 21, at King-Lynk Funeral Home, Fort Madison, where the family will meet with friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. and a Wake Service will be held at 7 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, July 22, at Sacred Heart Church, Fort Madison, with Rev. Thomas Parlette officiating. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Fort Madison. A memorial has been established for Sacred Heart Church Music Program or the Fort Madison Public Libraries and contributions may be left at King-Lynk Funeral Home.
