Donald Harold Dennert was born May 11, 1935 at home near Houghton, SD, to Harold and Louise (Buntrock) Dennert. He was the 3rd child of 6. He grew up on farms near Sand Lake National Wildlife Refuge and attended Lakeview Country School for 4 years. He then went to St. John's Lutheran Day School through the 8th grade. He graduated from Columbia High School in 1953. Don attended St. Olaf College in Northfield, MN for one year, SDSU for two quarters, then came back to Columbia to help his father farm until entering the Navy in December 1955. He was stationed in San Diego, California, and was honorably discharged in September 1957. He graduated from Northern State College in 1959 with a degree in Business with a minor in Composite Economics. Don married Marilyn Spencer on August 31, 1958 in Columbia, SD. He took a job with the United States Forest Service in June of 1959 in Rolla, Missouri where they lived for three years. Daughters, Kimberly and Melissa, were born in Rolla. Kimberly died in August 1960. They then moved to Milwaukee, WI for one year then Park Falls, WI, for 3 years where daughter Michele was born. Their last stop with the US Forest Service was in Cadillac, MI. They moved back to the home farm near Columbia in November 1965 to begin farming. Daughter, Lisa, and son, Darren were born after moving back to South Dakota. Marilyn died of cancer in February 1987. Don married Norma (Weihrauch) Milbrandt on February 29, 1992 in Columbia, SD. Norma added three children (Richard, Greg, and Marcy) to the family. They continued to live on the farm near Sand Lake and engaged in farming and raising cattle until he retired in 2000. Don and Norma moved to Richmond Lake and lived there for 16 years before moving to Aberdeen and spent the winters in Tucson, Arizona. Don served on the Groton School Board and National Cattlemen's Association. He was a member and officer at St. John's Lutheran Church. He then served as Financial Secretary at Our Savior Lutheran Church where he was a current member. He was also an associate member of Alive in Christ Lutheran Church in Tucson, AZ. Don enjoyed fishing, hunting, bowling and traveling. He was on the board of St. John's Lutheran Cemetery. He and Norma went on several trips with Clayton Buntrock and Jeanie Rudloff including exploring Australia, Thailand, Hawaii, Alaska, Canada, Baltic Sea, St Lucia, New England, Estes Park, Cayman Islands, Cancun and the Mediterranean. Don will be remembered for his quick wit and smirk and his card playing in Columbia and Sun City, AZ but especially for his strong faith and love of his family. Don is survived by wife, Norma; children, Melissa (Don) Buehrer, Michele Dennert, Lisa (Jeff) Howard, Darren (Aonnarin) Dennert and stepchildren, Rev. Richard (Mary) Milbrandt, Greg (Nancy) Milbrandt and Marcy Milbrandt along with 15 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. He is also survived by his siblings, Lloyd (Doris) Dennert, Doris (Alfred) Larson, H. Paul (Peggy) Dennert, and Alice (Tom) Hanson along with several nieces and nephews and step siblings, Phyllis Yeske, Joyce (Joel) Wilson, Sharon (Roger) Zastrow, Karl (Val) Eichler, Keith (Suzan) Eichler, and Betty (Steve) Dunker along with several step nieces and step nephews. Don was preceded in death by his parents Harold and Louise and step mother Elinor; first wife, Marilyn; daughter, Kimberly; sister, Rhea Davis and brother-in-law Bob Davis; step brother Dean Eichler, and parents-in-law; Ralph and Helen Spencer, Albert and Ella Weihrauch and Lloyd and Doris Milbrandt. Casket Bearers will be his grandsons: Clark Everson, Brad Milbrandt, Kyle Milbrandt, Layne Howard, Alekzander Leary, and Jameson Leary.
