Description	:	U.S. ARMY Mr. Donald De Groot, age 89, of Hull, passed away on Thursday, September 10, 2015, at the Avera Heart Hospital in Sioux Falls. There will be a memorial service on Monday, September 14, at 1:30pm, at the American Reformed Church in Hull. The Rev. Steven Bierly will officiate. Interment will be prior to the service at the Hope Cemetery in Hull. There will be a family prayer service on Monday, at 12:30pm, at the church. Donald Jay was born on January 11, 1926, in rural Hull, the son of Peter J. and Agnes (Nettinga) De Groot. He was first raised at Perkins, and in 1932, his family moved to a farm northeast of Hull, where he attended the Lincoln No. 6 country school and graduated from the Hull Public School in 1943. He then served in the United States Army from 1944 to 1946, during World War II. He received his training in Mineral Wells, Texas, and was a machine gunner in the Philippine Islands. He also served in Japan. After an honorable discharge, he farmed with his father. On March 2, 1950, Don married Janet Arlene Huisman in Rock Valley. They lived at Sheldon for four years and then moved to the De Groot family farm at Hull. In 1983, they moved into Hull. He was a member of the American Reformed Church, where he served as an elder and a deacon on the consistory, as well as a Sunday school teacher. He was also a member of the boards of directors of the Sioux County schools and the Hull Cooperative Elevator. Besides being a farmer, Mr. De Groot had been a supervisor for the Dairy Herd Improvement Association in O’Brien County. He enjoyed all sports, fishing, and raising Brown Swiss cattle. Survivors include his wife of more than 65 years; seven children and their spouses, Karla Keizer, of Joplin, Missouri; Daryl and Marla De Groot, of Hull; Jolene and Steve Reekers, of Rock Springs, Wyoming; Pat and Dean Woelber, of Cedar Falls; Marlys and Mark Freese, of Lincoln, Nebraska; the Rev. Doug and Alethea “Lee” De Groot, of Hull; and Dan and Sheila De Groot, of Hartley; 23 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren; a brother and his wife, Paul and Muriel De Groot, of Omaha, Nebraska; a sister and her husband, Judith and Marv Foreman, of Lakewood, California; and a sister-in-law, Claretta De Groot, of Doon. He was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Leon Keizer; a brother, Kenneth De Groot; a sister and her husband, Sylvia and Henry Gaalswyk, and another infant sister.
