Donald James Bowling was born August 19, 1922 to James and Leone (Byrum) Bowling. He grew up in the Dog Ear Lake area where he lived on the family homestead. Don passed away quietly at his home on the morning of March 19, 2011, at the age of 88 years and 7 months. Growing up on the family homestead, Don enjoyed working with his horses while farming before modern equipment became available. In addition he liked to train and break horses. Don married Mary Ellen Petersen on December 27, 1958 in Winner, SD. Together they made their home on the Bowling family homestead. To this union three sons were born; David James, Donald Allen and Glen Scott. Don and Mary Ellen shared 52 years together. Don had a great love for baseball. He played baseball for many years in Tripp County. Later, he coached, and then served as an umpire for many years. All three of Don and Mary Ellen's boys played baseball. Don loved to watch the boys play, he also coached them. Don served as an umpire at Clearfield for many years. No one ever doubted the calls he made. He was known as an honest, fair umpire and person. He also umpired a game in which his two grandsons played on opposing teams. Don was inducted into the South Dakota Umpires Association as an Honorary Lifetime Member on October 7, 1995. He was so proud of this honor and hung the certificate on the wall beside his chair. Aside from baseball, Don had many hobbies. He enjoyed going fishing and spent many hours with his friends doing the same. He also loved to play cards and enjoyed getting together with his many friends for a few hands of pitch in Clearfield. Reading was a passion of Don's. He spent many hours in his favorite chair reading western novels that Mary Ellen would get him at the local library. Don also loved his John Deer tractors and had several older H and B tractors. Raising his family on the farm was Don's biggest joy in life. He enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his six grandchildren. His eyes would light up each time they would come to visit and he always had a big hug and pat on the back for each of them. Fieldwork, working cattle and calving are just a few things that Don enjoyed. Anywhere that Don would go his dog, Annie would follow. One could find them both sitting in the chair together enjoying a good book, watching a baseball game on TV, eating Fruit Loops, or walking down to the lot to sort cattle. Side by side, there were inseparable. Don is survived by his wife Mary Ellen; three sons, David (Amy) Bowling, Midland, SD, Donald Allen (Eva) Bowling, Winner, SD, and Glen Bowling, Pierre, SD; six grandchildren; Jessica Bowling, Plainview, NE, Tyler (Summer) Bowling, Rapid City, SD, James (Victoria) Bowling, Winner, SD, Ashley Bowling, Winner, SD, Tristain Bowling, Rapid City, SD, and Tiffany Bowling, Pierre, SD; one nephew, Bob (Marta) Bowling, Alliance, NE; two nieces, Karen (Jim) Berg, Winner, SD, and Arlis (Lyle) Kemnitz, Mobridge, SD; and a host of relatives and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents, James and Leone (Byrum) Bowling; brothers Max Bowling and Robert (Lela) Bowling; sister, Thelma (Noel) Dodson; and an infant sister.
