Donald James Welken was born on October 30, 1929. He is the third son of Olav and Emma Welken. He has three brothers; Lloyd, Kenneth and Ralph. Donald lived with his family in Skandia Township from 1929 to 1939 where he attended Rural schools. In 1939, they moved to Green Township. He attended Green Consolidated School through the 8th grade. He attended the Zion Lutheran Church and Sunday School. In 1947, Donald graduated from Valley City High School. He entered the United States Air Force in 1950. After receiving his discharge, he returned to Valley City. On July 21, 1951, he was united in marriage with Marjory E. Hanson of Valley City. After living in Oregon from 1951 to 1953, they returned to the Valley City area, where they have been engaged in farming. Donald and Marjory are members of the Zion Lutheran Church, where Donald has been a trustee. He also was Clerk of the Green School Board for a few years. He is a member of the Green Township Board at the present time. Donald and Marjory have one son, David Donald, born January 28, 1954. David was married to Mary Baldwin in 1974. They are farming in partnership with Donald's father. The Donald Welkens also have three daughters: Cynthia Diane, born January 28, 1957, who attends the University of North Dakota; Jeane Marie, born October 5, 1958, a Senior at Valley City High School, and Kathleen Ann, born February 26, 1962, an eighth grader at Valley City Junior High School. Obituary Donald James Welken, 75, Valley City, died Feb. 24, 2005, at a hospital in Mesa, Ariz. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 2, in Grace Free Lutheran Church, Valley City, with the Rev. Joel Rolf officiating. Burial will be at Zion Lutheran Church, Green Township. Visitation will be held from 2 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Oliver-Nathan Funeral Chapel, Valley City, and will continue one hour prior to services in the church. Donald was born Oct. 30, 1929, at Valley City, the son of Olav and Emma (Larsen) Welken. On July 21, 1951, Donald married Marjory Hanson, at First Lutheran Church in Valley City. The couple resided in Portland, Ore., for two years before returning to Green Township, where he farmed until 1976. In 1976, Donald and Marjory moved to Valley City, where he began his career with the United States Federal Crop Insurance Services as a claims adjuster. In 1982, they moved to Bismarck with Federal Crop, where Donald served as District Director over five states, until his retirement in 1993. Donald is survived by his wife, Marjory (Hanson) Welken; four children, David (Mary) Welken, Ridgeland, S.C., Cynthia (Kim) Place, Mandan, Jeane (Ron) Simley, Watertown, S.D., and Kathy Welken, Rapid City, S.D.; one brother, Ralph (Barbara) Welken, Detroit Lakes, Minn.; one foster sister, Esther (Olson) Knutson, Los Angeles; and four grandchildren, Michael Welken, Chicago, Michael Place, Bismarck, and Megan and Stephanie Simley, both of Watertown, S.D. Donald was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Lloyd and Kenneth; and one foster sister, Josephine (Essert) Roen. Memorial contributions may be made to Zion Lutheran Church Improvement Fund, Green Township.
