Description	:	Donald “Don” Erickson, age 87, of Madison, passed away on Sunday, June 2, 2019 at the Sioux Falls VA Medical Center. Funeral service will be 1 PM on Wednesday, June 5th at the United Methodist Church, Madison with Rev. Barry Whipkey officiating. Visitation will be 5-7 PM on Tuesday at the Weiland Funeral Chapel and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church. Donald John Erickson was born December 29, 1931 in rural Lake County, South Dakota to Edmond & Amelia (Thompson) Erickson. He farmed most of his life and took over the farming operation on the family homestead at the age of 16. The farm was homesteaded in 1878 and is 1 mile east and 2 miles south of Junius and was passed down from his great-grandpa, John Erickson. Don never grew tired of “checking” the crops and had a love for his cattle. He married Edith May Quinn on July 2, 1952 in Ramona, SD and three children were born to this union. One week after their marriage, Uncle Sam sent the word to join the Korean War and he served in the US Army from October 1952 and was honorable discharged in September 1954. While in Korea, he tore the ligaments in his knee, which eventually led to the loss of his legs due to complications. Don went through several artificial legs and the last 2 years he went downhill until the final hospitalization when he joined the Lord in Heaven. Don & Edith were members of the United Methodist Church in Madison. In the past, Don was a member of the Presbyterian Church for several years prior to switching to the Methodist Church. Don was a lifetime member of the VFW, member of the DAV and American Legion. He was a great family man who took his family RVing several times, visiting California, the Ozarks in Arkansas, Wyoming & Yellowstone National Park along with some fishing trips to Minnesota. He loved to golf in amputee tournaments in Iowa, South Dakota & Wyoming. Don enjoyed his time spent with his McDonald’s coffee buddies. Donald was a great dad. We love him dearly and he will be greatly missed. Donald is survived by his wife of 66 years, Edith; children, Donelle, DeWayne (Mary) and Doug (Kathy); three grandchildren, Olivea, Tyler & Abbie and leaves behind many nieces & nephews. He preceded in death by his parents, Edmond & Amelia; two sisters, Genevieve (Clarence) Paul and Gladys (Arthur) Richert and one brother, Roy. - Weiland Funeral Chapel
