Description	:	Donald Joseph Schmitz, 84, of Washburn, died Friday, February 27 at the LaPorte City Nursing & Rehab Center. He was born April 10, 1930 in Waterloo, son of Aloysius and Agnes Schaefer Schmitz. He married Catherine Gengler October 10, 1952 in Rolla, Mo. Donald owned and operated Don Schmitz & Sons Earthmoving Company for 35 years. He was a U.S. Army veteran. Survivors include his wife; three sons, Dan (Donna) of LaPorte City, Dick (Monica) and Andy all of Washburn; a daughter, Ann (Dan) Gardner of Gilbertville; 13 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; a sister, Lois Griffith of Lansing; two sisters-in-law, Marcie Schmitz of LaPorte City and Betty Linebarger of Freeport, Ill. and two brothers-in-law, Paul (Mary) Gengler of Waterloo and Dan Conry of Sun City, Ariz. Preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Gene, Jimmy and Richard; a sister, Geraldine; three brothers-in-law, Lloyd Griffith, Louis Gengler and Fred Linebarger and two sisters-in-law, Shirley Conry and Kathy Gengler. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary’s of Mt Carmel Catholic Church, Eagle Center, with burial in the church cemetery, where full military rites will be conducted by Nugent Demuth American Legion Post 714. Public visitation will be from 4-8 pm Wednesday at Hagarty – Waychoff – Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway where there will be a 4 pm rosary and a 7 pm vigil service. Visitation will continue for an hour before services at the church on Thursday. Memorials may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice or the LaPorte City Fire and Rescue.
