He was raised and educated in Marshall County attending the Liberty Schools and later graduating from the Saint Anthony High School in 1944. Sparks was born on Saturday; October 30, 1926 in rural Marshalltown; Marshall County, Iowa. He was the son of Floyd and Louise (Carkhuff) Sparks. He was raised and educated in Marshall County attending the Liberty Schools and later graduating from the Saint Anthony High School in 1944. Following his graduation he enlisted with the United States Army and actively served his country during World War II in the Philippine Islands and Japan. Following his honorable discharge from the United States Army, Donald returned home and was united in marriage to Mary Jean Griffiths on October 29, 1949 in Clemons, Iowa at the Clemons Congregational Church. Donald farmed and raised livestock all of his life. He especially loved and enjoyed raising and feeding cattle. His love for farming was present right up until his death on Monday. Donald L. Sparks, 91, of Clemons, Iowa passed away on Monday; September 15, 2003. Those left to mourn his passing are his wife: Mary Sparks of New Providence, his daughter: Patricia (Paul) McKinley of Chariton, his son: Bill (Olga) Sparks, of Des Moines, his brother: Russell (Betty) Sparks, of Melbourne, his brother: John Sparks and friend Terri, of State Center, his sister: Virginia Clemons of State Center; his sister: Maxine (John) Mohr, of Marshalltown, his sister: Nola (LaVern) German, State Center, his sister: Joanne (Robert) Benner, of State Center, his sisters-in-law Virginia Sparks of State Center, Ina Mae Sparks of Clemons, and Evelyn Sparks of Union, his grandchildren: Kasee, Ilya, Sarah, and Brooke Sparks; and Erin and Sean McKinley. Donald was preceded in death by his parents Floyd and Louise, his brothers Jim, Roger and Floyd, and his brother-in-law Bill Clemons. May they rest in peace. Visitation will be held on Wednesday; September 17, 2003 from 5:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. at the Biersborn Funeral Home in Union, Iowa where the family will be present to greet friends from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday; September 18, 2003 at the Bangor-Liberty Friends Church with Reverend Keith Haisch officiating. Burial will follow services in the Clemons Cemetery; Clemons, Iowa. A memorial fund has been established in his name for the Bangor Liberty Friends Church or the House of Compassion.
