He was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church at Altona and graduated from Pilger High School in 1948. Don served in the United States Army from 1952-1954. Don married Delaine Miller February 12, 1956, at Winside. The couple farmed south of Wayne for many years. In 2009, Don moved to The Oaks in Wayne. He is a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Wayne, and a former member of Trinity Lutheran Church at Altona and St. Paul Lutheran Church in Wisner. Don enjoyed following the Huskers, and other sports, polka dancing, playing cards, and shooting pool at the Wayne Senior Center. Don is survived by his children, Layne (Roxy) Matthes of Wisner, Lonnie (Pam) Matthes of Wayne, Loy (Mary) Matthes of Rapid City, SD, and Jaelene (Steve) Koll of Lincoln; ten grandchildren, Tony Matthes (Lisa) of Genoa, Cole Matthes of Lincoln, Kelsy Matthes (Mike Jelinek) of Verdigree, Katelyn Matthes, Emily Matthes of Wayne, Samuel Matthes, Sarah Matthes and Jacob Matthes of Rapid City, SD, Brandy Koll of Kearney and Quincy Koll of Lincoln; two great-grandchildren, Layney Matthes and Lausyn Matthes of Genoa; a sister, Marjorie (Rolland) Victor of Lincoln; nieces, and nephews. Don is preceded in death by his parents, wife, Delaine in 2000, sisters, Orvilla Lewis and Marilyn Gadeken. Don's family appreciates your thoughts and kindness and invites you to lunch in the church fellowship hall following the service. Memorials May be directed to the family for a later designation.
