Description	:	Donnie was born on 30 January 1941. He was the third child of Lawrence and Genevieve Gehling. The Gehling family lived in a small unfinished house in Carroll, Iowa, at the time. Read More	Donnie was born on 30 January 1941. He was the third child of Lawrence and Genevieve Gehling. The Gehling family lived in a small unfinished house in Carroll, Iowa, at the time. Times were tough, and groceries often scarce. Lawrence worked two jobs, often shoving snow off the city streets after putting in a full day's work at the Hires Electric Company. On weekends he trapped muskrats in Beaver Creek. Finally, in the spring of 1941, the Gehling family managed to rent the Bedford farm near Willey, Iowa. The farmhouse on the property had several rooms, with a nice pantry in the kitchen, one bedroom downstairs and three bedrooms with closets upstairs. Things were looking up. But by early May all three children were sick with whooping cough. Donnie's health was especially worrysome. At four months he only weighed eleven pounds. There also had always been something wrong with his back, making it so that he could never lay straight. And now he was beginning to cough up blood. The end came on 9 May 1941, his father's twenty-fifth birthday. In the early morning hours, Donnie was discovered dead of what was called 'quick pneumonia." Lawrence Gehling fashioned Donnie's coffin out of some new lumber he had on hand. A kindly neighbor lady lined the interior with white satin and embroidered material. Donnie was buried in his great grandpa Gehling's lot at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Carroll, Iowa. The priest didn't have a funeral mass for him, saying that it really wasn't necessary as he was already with the angels. His unmarked grave was decorated with flowers from the family garden since there was no money available to buy a bouquet from the local greenhouse. Many years later, Donnie's oldest sister placed a tombstone on his grave. It read simply: "Donald Leo Gehling Jan. 30, May 9, 1941."
