Donald Osterholm, tail gunner on a B-29 based in the Marianas Islands, has been missing in action since March 10 over Japan according to a war department message received Saturday afternoon by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Will Osterholm of Waverly. Friday morning the word had come unofficially in a letter from Don's commanding officer and Saturday noon another letter arrived, this time from the mother of the co-pilot on his plane. The letter from the commanding officer, written March 21, says, "As his squadron commander I was pleased to have him in my squadron and I know his crew mates regarded him highly as their tall gunner. Donald acquitted himself nobly and you can be proud that he contributed greatly to the success of the mission from which he has failed to return. He showed himself at all times to be a good soldier and an excellent gunner and I would like to assure you that every means possible was provided for the safety of the crew. When there is more information it will be sent to you. Again I offer my sympathy and that of Donald's many friends in the squadron." Joseph G. Osterholm was a member of the crew of a B-29 which made three missions over Tokyo March 9 and 10, 1945. It was from this last mission that the plane did not return. He is survived by his parents, a brother, Ray, recently discharged from the Navy, and a sister, Connie.
