Description	:	Donald Thompson was born 3 miles south of West Branch, Iowa on November 21, 1914. He was the first of 3 sons born to Danish immigrants Jens ('Jim') Thompson and Thyra (Jensen) Thompson. Read More	Donald Thompson was born 3 miles south of West Branch, Iowa on November 21, 1914. He was the first of 3 sons born to Danish immigrants Jens ('Jim') Thompson and Thyra (Jensen) Thompson. He grew up on a farm just east of Centerdale, Iowa with his parents and brothers Floyd and Wilfred. He attended Bethany Lutheran Church in West Branch and went to school in West Liberty, Iowa. Sometimes he would ride a pony the 5 miles he needed to go to get to school. As a young man, he worked as a hired man, most notably for a man named Alfred Hobendale. His high school classmates noted about him in the yearbook: 'Still waters run deep'. He married Fern Elizabeth Pedersen (also Dane)of West Branch in the parsonage of Bethany Lutheran Church on February 19, 1938. They settled just west of West Branch, on a hill overlooking the Hoover historical site, on a farm that had belonged to Fern's father, Severin Pedersen. Here they raised corn, soybeans, oats, hay, hogs, cattle and chickens, as well as 2 daughters: Deanna Kay (Thompson)Weismann (b. 1940) and Carol Ann (Thompson) Gilmer (b. 1946). When she went into labor, Fern got in the car and honked the horn to call Donald in from the cornfield where he was picking corn by hand (as was done at that time). Donald got his hand caught in the mechanical corn-picker some years later and lost 4 fingers on his dominant right hand. He was out of the hospital and back doing chores 2 weeks later. Donald and Fern retired to town (West Branch) in 1980, but he continued to help out on the farm well into his 80's. He died on September 11, 2008 at Crestview Care Center in West Branch, (built on ground he once farmed). He was survived by his 2 daughters, 5 grand-children and 7 great-grandchildren. Fern died in 2002. Their grave-site is at the crest of the hill overlooking 'Pedersen Valley', previously part of his father-in law's home farm. They lie a few steps from Severin and Christina Pedersen and a stone's throw from Jens and Thyra Thompson, his parents.
