Don was born Oct. 10, 1932, to Louis and Amanda (Peters) Beck. He was born in the home where he lived for his entire life. Donald Louis Beck, 77, died peacefully on Tues., June 8, 2010, surrounded by family. Don was born Oct. 10, 1932, to Louis and Amanda (Peters) Beck. He was born in the home where he lived for his entire life. Don graduated from Geneseo High School and attended Iowa State University, where he was a member of Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity. Don was a veteran of the Korean War. On Oct. 2, 1954, he married Ruth Daily at St. Joseph Church in Waterloo. The couple farmed in Eagle Township for 55 years. When Don was actively farming, he participated in Corn Growers Association, Pork Producers and Voorhies Grain Board of Directors. In 1960, Don was recognized as the Black Hawk County Outstanding Young Farmer. He was a volunteer 4-H leader for the Bright Eagles 4-H Club. Don was well known for his success selling produce and baked goods at area farmers markets. He served as President of the Farmers Market Association. He planted a 2010 sweet corn crop. Don was the beneficiary of two kidney transplants for which the family will be eternally grateful. After his transplants he exceeded everyone's expectations for longevity and vigor. Don's hobbies included driving and exhibiting his John Deere tractor at exhibits and collectors events. Don's legacy includes serving as a foster parent for 10 years. Through the farming operation, neighborhood teens had their first job and earned money for their first car and college expenses. Don delighted in spending time with his family and enjoyed spending time at the family cabin at Delhi. He is survived by his wife and his seven children: Dan (Jane) of Hills, Louis (Pat) of Buckingham, Mary Ann (Bob) Wagner of West Des Moines, Wayne (Kathie) of Aledo, Ill., Alan (Lisa) of Saratoga, Calif., Sara (Gary) Hendrzak of Orlando, Fla., and Lowell (Stephanie) of McAllen, Texas. There are 19 grandchildren and 3 great-grandsons. He was preceded in death by a sister, Rose Keese. Funeral Services will be 10 a.m. Sat., June 12, at St. Mary of Mt. Carmel Church Eagle Center, with burial at the St. Mary of Mt. Carmel Cemetery. Public visitation will be at St. Mary of Mt. Carmel Church Eagle Center on Fri., June 11, from 3-7 p.m. There will be a 3 p.m. Rosary immediately followed by a scripture and sharing service. Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway is in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be directed to the Iowa 4-H Foundation or Iowa FFA Foundation.
